Sports associations celebrate mothers

Sports associations have hailed the role athletes, staff and officials who double as mothers play in the development of sports in the country.
The associations have also called for exclusivity in sports as the country commemorated Mother’s Day yesterday.
Speaking in an interview Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) secretary general Yamikani Kauma praised women in netball for balancing the demands of the sport and motherhood, but further called for support during pregnancy and after giving birth.
“Motherhood should not mean the end of a sporting career. We need flexible training arrangements, appropriate medical support and clear return-to-play guidelines to help mothers continue competing safely. No athlete should have to choose between motherhood and her sporting ambitions,” she said.
In a separate interview, Bodybuilding and Fitness of Malawi secretary general Aaron Simwaka encouraged mothers to engage in fitness activities such as weight lifting and jogging.

“We believe that a happy mother is a fit and healthy mother. At Bfam we have introduced female categories in our competitions and we are happy that each year the number of participants is increasing,” he said.
Chess Association of Malawi publicity secretary Francisco Mwangupili also encouraged mothers and their children to try chess as it presents various benefits.
“We also celebrate mothers who encourage and support their young ones in the game of chess. They understand the benefits chess presents to their young ones both in the short term and long term such as enhancing memory, concentration and strategic thinking, “ he said.
Football Association of Malawi communications officer Collins Nsunza also wished mothers a joyous day.
“Behind every footballer and every football star is a mother who believed in the dream first,” he said.
