Mutapa Gold Resources is targeting about US$100 000 from its inaugural charity golf day to support three medical institutions serving communities around its mining operations, as the State-Owned gold producer steps up spending on social infrastructure.
Chief executive officer Patrick Maseva-Shayawabaya said the annual event, which attracted between 154 and 160 players, was designed to mobilise the company’s contractors, suppliers and business partners behind healthcare projects at Loretto Mission in the Midlands, Shamva Hospital and Bindura Hospital.
“The purpose of the event is to raise funding for the three medical institutions in the communities that we operate in,” Shayawabaya said.
The fundraising target adds a new layer to Mutapa Gold’s corporate social responsibility programme, which the company says has already channelled millions of dollars into infrastructure serving mining communities.
Shayawabaya said the proceeds from the golf day would be divided among the three institutions, although the precise allocation would depend on the funds raised by the end of the event.
“We are looking at a number of $100 000, which will be split between the three entities,” he said.
The initiative comes as mining companies face growing expectations to demonstrate that mineral wealth is translating into tangible economic and social benefits for communities surrounding their operations.
Mutapa Gold’s existing projects include the US$3 million Masembura Water Pipeline Project, as well as improvements at Bindura Hospital and the rehabilitation of Shamva Hospital. Shayawabaya said the two hospital projects together cost the company nearly US$4 million.
“This will be in addition to the various community and social responsibility projects that we have done,” he said.
The company’s approach places its contractors and commercial partners at the centre of its community investment strategy, using the golf tournament as a platform to combine fundraising with business networking.
Shayawabaya said the turnout had exceeded expectations, describing the support from contractors and business partners as magnificent.
The event also illustrates the scale of Mutapa Gold’s commercial network, with as many as 160 participants taking part in an event whose primary objective was not business development but raising funds for healthcare.
“We can achieve a lot together rather than as individuals,” Shayawabaya said.
Beyond the fundraising, the tournament provided an opportunity for executives, contractors and business partners to strengthen relationships around the company’s mining operations.
But Shayawabaya said the networking was secondary to the charity objective.
“The most important objective is to raise funds for the medical institutions in our communities,” he said.
Mutapa Gold intends to make the charity golf day an annual event, creating a recurring funding channel for healthcare facilities in areas where the company operates.
