President Mnangagwa’s UN slot had absolutely nothing to do with global respect and prestige

Trying to glamorize mediocrity is perhaps the hardest job.

Recently he took to X to claim that President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressing a UN General Assembly session first was a sign of “respect and diplomatic prestige.” This assertion is pure political spin. It attempts to turn a routine administrative proceeding into a triumph of global stature. The UN General Assembly operates on strict administrative rules, not political favoritism.

Brazil and the United States have long-established positions at the opening of the General Debate. Brazil traditionally speaks first, a practice dating back to 1955. The United States speaks second as the host nation. Beyond those two fixed slots, the speaking order follows a clear administrative formula. The speaking order takes account of the level of representation, alongside established protocol and scheduling arrangements.

Heads of state take precedence, followed by vice presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers, in that sequence. The UN’s rules provide that speakers are generally called in the order in which they signify their desire to speak, within the established arrangements for the General Debate. In other words, the delegation itself indicates when it wishes to speak, rather than the UN assigning the slot as a mark of diplomatic distinction.

The UN General Debate spans several days. Each day is split into morning and afternoon blocks. Someone must take the podium first when an afternoon session opens. Being placed at the start of a session block, therefore, does not signify any special diplomatic distinction. It is an established scheduling and procedural arrangement, not an award of diplomatic honour. This is not the first time routine international protocol has been repackaged for domestic consumption.

Government spokespersons routinely frame standard diplomatic mechanics as proof that the isolation of the regime has ended. They rely on the assumption that the public will not understand the internal workings of multilateral institutions. In reality, the global stage operates on objective facts rather than official media narratives. World leaders understand UN protocol.

They know that being assigned an early afternoon slot does not signify global esteem. It is simply a matter of the established scheduling of the General Debate. The irony of this political spin becomes even more apparent inside the UN hall itself. While state media celebrates the timetable, the President addressed a nearly empty auditorium. True global prestige draws an audience. Empty seats reflect international indifference, regardless of what time the speech begins. Furthermore, true global standing cannot be falsified through procedural scheduling.

Respect on the international stage is earned through strict adherence to constitutionalism, the protection of human rights, and the rule of law. It is earned by fostering a strong economy, ending systemic corruption, and respecting the democratic will of the citizens. A government that regularly violates these core principles cannot buy genuine influence simply by securing an early speaking slot.

A nation that suffers from economic distress, broken public services, and political repression cannot claim global admiration on the basis of a UN timetable. When state officials celebrate an administrative time slot as a foreign policy victory, they highlight their own desperation for legitimacy. When a government must resort to misrepresenting standard event scheduling as a diplomatic victory, it reveals a deep insecurity about its actual standing in the world. Real influence speaks through policy, governance, and respect for international norms.

It does not need to manufacture fake accolades out of standard UN bureaucracy. Propaganda might persuade a partisan audience at home, but it changes nothing in the real world of foreign policy. Substantive international respect cannot be manufactured through routine protocol. Real prestige is earned at home through good governance, not requested from a UN scheduling clerk.
