Zimpost tests drone delivery service in rural areas
AI summary
Zimpost has launched a drone delivery initiative in Matabeleland South Province that will see unmanned aircraft being used to reach communities that are difficult to access through conventional delivery networks.
The demonstration occurred on Saturday, 10 October, at Bambadzi Shopping Centre in Bulilima District, where a drone transported a parcel between Bambadzi and Masendu Digital Centre.
The initiative is being developed in partnership with Drone Solutions as Zimpost explores new technology to improve its services, particularly in rural areas.
The launch was attended by Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera, government officials, representatives of the postal sector and local community leaders.
Speaking at the event, Mavetera welcomed the project but said technological development must bring measurable benefits to communities.
She said any expansion will need to be guided by aviation approvals, safety, reliability and cost, and noted that any proposal involving medical supplies will require the involvement of health authorities.
Zimpost Postmaster-General Maxwell Chitendeni said the initiative forms part of efforts to modernise the postal service and develop more flexible logistics solutions.
He said the organisation also plans to introduce artificial intelligence into its distribution network to help identify efficient delivery routes in urban areas, improve planning and reduce unnecessary travel.
However, Saturday’s demonstration does not mean a nationwide commercial drone delivery network is now operational.
Details such as delivery charges, maximum parcel weight, operating distances and the timetable for expansion have not been publicly confirmed.
