Police Warn Trick-or-Treaters to Respect Religious Beliefs as Councils Distribute ‘No Halloween’ Posters

Police forces and local authorities across England are distributing ‘no trick or treat’ posters ahead of Halloween, encouraging visitors to respect households that do not wish to participate in the celebrations.

The notices are intended to help residents discourage children and other visitors from knocking on their doors. Authorities have highlighted several reasons why people may choose not to take part, including religious or cultural beliefs, personal safety concerns, health conditions and financial difficulties.

Leicestershire Police has advised trick-or-treaters to avoid properties displaying the notices or homes without Halloween decorations, such as pumpkins.

Its guidance explains that some residents may be observing religious or cultural beliefs that do not include Halloween.

Officers in Oadby and Wigston thanked residents for helping to maintain communities that are safe, respectful and inclusive.

Kent Council Highlights Religious and Financial Reasons for Avoiding Halloween

Swale Borough Council in Kent has issued similar advice in partnership with Kent Police, with both authorities making ‘no trick or treat’ posters available to households.

The council said some residents may have religious reasons for not participating, while others may feel uncomfortable opening their doors to strangers after dark.

It also acknowledged that some households may not have enough disposable income to purchase sweets or decorations.

Hannah Perkin, chairman of the council’s community committee, said residents should be allowed to avoid Halloween for personal reasons, including health problems and financial hardship.

She said some people might be concerned about opening their doors to unfamiliar visitors, while others could be dealing with circumstances that make taking part difficult.

Perkin also warned against disruptive behaviour, including throwing eggs, saying such actions were unacceptable and could spoil the celebrations for others.

Police Warn Parents About Eggs, Flour and Fireworks

Police forces have also issued warnings about activities that can cause damage or put people at risk during Halloween.

Suffolk Constabulary has encouraged retailers to restrict the sale of eggs and flour to young people in the period leading up to the celebrations.

In Hampshire, police have asked parents to ensure their children cannot access fireworks, alcohol, eggs or flour.

The warnings come amid concerns about anti-social behaviour associated with Halloween, including the use of eggs and other items to target properties.

Councils Encourage Residents to Avoid Carving Pumpkins

Environmental concerns have also featured in guidance issued by local authorities, with some councils encouraging households to decorate pumpkins without carving them.

Bedford Council has asked residents to consider painting pumpkins instead of cutting them open, in an effort to reduce food waste.

Councillor Nicky Gribble encouraged people to use pumpkin flesh in recipes rather than discard it.

North East Derbyshire Council has advised residents to buy pumpkins from local farms rather than supermarkets, citing the emissions associated with transporting produce over long distances.

The authority has also encouraged households to choose treats that generate less waste instead of individually wrapped sweets, which may involve paper and foil packaging that is not properly disposed of.

Halloween’s Historical Origins Include Celtic and Christian Traditions

Halloween developed from Samhain, an ancient festival associated with Celtic religious traditions in Britain and other parts of Europe.

It later became known in Christian tradition as All Hallows’ Eve, the day before All Saints’ Day on November 1, when Christians commemorate the dead.

Religious objections to Halloween can vary among faith communities. Some non-Christians may object to elements they associate with Christianity, while some Christians may have concerns about its pagan origins.

Authorities have referred to religious and cultural beliefs as among the reasons households may choose not to participate.

Police Raise Concerns About Vulnerable Residents

Police and councils have also highlighted the impact unexpected visits can have on vulnerable people, particularly those who may feel uncomfortable answering the door to strangers at night.

Leicestershire Police has noted that some residents may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and could find trick-or-treat visits distressing.

Buckinghamshire Council has similarly urged visitors to consider that some people may be dealing with personal difficulties and asked Halloween participants not to knock too loudly.

The council has also recommended using battery-powered tealights rather than real candles when decorating carved pumpkins.

Metropolitan Police and Other Forces Issue Halloween Advice

The Metropolitan Police has described Halloween as an occasion that can provide harmless entertainment for families but may also be a frightening experience for some residents.

Sussex Police has advised children and other trick-or-treaters to consider visiting only homes where they know the occupants.

Derbyshire Constabulary has also warned that Halloween visits can be stressful for some people.

The guidance from police forces and councils encourages residents to respect households that choose not to participate and to avoid behaviour that could cause distress or disruption.
