NPP left economy in shambles, but NDC is fixing it – Health Minister

AI summary
The Minister for Health and Member of Parliament for Juaboso, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has taken a swipe at the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, accusing it of running down Ghana’s economy.
According to him, the second term administration of President John Mahama inherited an economy in distress and is currently working tirelessly to restore stability and growth.
He was speaking at the commissioning of a newly-built NDC constituency office complex at Agogoso in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region.
The Health Minister stated that the Akufo-Addo’s tenure was marked by economic mismanagement, stalled development, and a rapidly depreciating cedi.
He said the current NDC government is taking steps to stabilize the economy and restore Ghana’s economic health, addressing the challenges inherited from the previous administration.
“The economy was severely impacted by the NPP government when we came to office but President Mahama’s administration is now steering it back on track,” he said.
Mr. Akandoh used the occasion to call on members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain calm, patient and united behind the government.
He explained that every government is formed and sustained by a political party, and its success or failure largely depends on the commitment and support of its members.
He therefore appealed to party faithful, especially the youth and grassroots, not to be disheartened over delays in appointments and other expectations.
“You cannot all become District Chief Executives or Ministers in the same year. Exercise patience and wait for your time. Every government needs its party members to sell its achievements and good performance to the public ahead of elections,” he advised.
He stressed that unity is critical if the NDC is to consolidate its gains and retain power beyond 2028, urging members to put aside internal differences and work with a common purpose.
The office complex was constructed and fully financed by the Atwima Mponua NDC Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Haruna Salifu Sampa, popularly known as Chairman Kutu, who is seeking re-election in the upcoming constituency elections.
He also donated a brand-new Sprinter bus to the party to enhance its movement and organizational activities in the constituency.
On his part, he said the construction of the office complex forms part of his vision to give the party a befitting home and strengthen its organizational base in the constituency.
Outdooring the facility, Chairman Kutu appealed to delegates to renew his mandate to enable him to continue his good works for the party.
He urged party members to embrace peace, unity, and togetherness despite the outcome of their upcoming internal constituency elections, noting that without unity, the party cannot make progress.
Alhaji Sampa also highlighted some of his interventions through the Support Kutu Foundation, an initiative he said provides soft loans and financial support to party members, particularly women and youth, to boost their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
According to him, the initiative has already benefited several party members across the constituency and will be expanded if he is retained as Chairman.
Some constituency executive aspirants contesting on the ticket of Team Kutu also took turns to acknowledge the good leadership of Chairman Kutu.
They described his leadership style as inclusive, selfless and development-oriented, and commended him for not only building the party office but also supporting members in diverse ways.
They urged delegates to vote massively for Team Kutu to ensure continuity, consolidate the party’s structures at the grassroots, and position the NDC for resounding victory in future elections.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by constituency executives, ward coordinators, branch executives, party faithful and supporters, who praised Chairman Kutu for setting a new standard for party leadership in the Ashanti Region.
They described the new office complex as a symbol of commitment and a major boost to the running of the party in Atwima Mponua.
