US Embassy Confirms Some South Africans Rejected From Refugee Programme, Applicants Demand Answers

The United States Embassy in South Africa has confirmed that some South Africans who applied for resettlement through the US Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) have been declared ineligible to proceed with their applications.

The embassy issued a clarification on 25 October 2026 following growing questions about the programme and the rejection of some applicants. The announcement has sparked frustration among South Africans who say they have not received clear explanations about why their applications were unsuccessful.

According to the embassy, US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) assesses applications individually to determine whether applicants meet the requirements stipulated under US law. The process includes security and medical screenings.

However, the clarification has done little to satisfy applicants seeking more information about the reasons behind their rejection.

The embassy’s statement emphasised that applying for the refugee programme does not guarantee acceptance. Each applicant must undergo the necessary assessments before a decision can be made on their eligibility.

The US Refugee Admissions Program has attracted considerable attention in South Africa following an executive order that prioritised Afrikaners and other racial minorities who were alleged to face unjust racial discrimination in the country.

Executive Order 14204, issued in February 2025, directed the US government to prioritise refugee resettlement for Afrikaners and other South Africans identified in the order.

While some applications have been rejected, thousands of South Africans have already been admitted to the United States through the programme.

According to data from the Refugee Processing Center analysed by the Center for Immigration Studies, 16,287 South Africans were admitted as refugees during the 2026 US financial year, which ran from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026.

The figures show that total refugee admissions during the period reached 16,292, with the remaining five admissions involving Afghan nationals.

The total represented approximately 93% of the 17,500 refugee admissions ceiling set for the financial year.

The embassy’s clarification prompted criticism from social media users who wanted more specific information about why certain applicants had been declared ineligible.

Some questioned whether the decisions were related to criminal records, medical conditions, age or other eligibility requirements.

One user, @elanavh, expressed frustration with the embassy’s response, arguing that applicants deserved clearer explanations.

“You’re still not answering the question. How difficult is it? Criminal record? Illness? Too old? Etc. It’s literally that easy. Why are you so vague?” the user asked.

Another user, @ErnstVente89142, questioned the lack of detailed explanations and the handling of requests for information.

“Why are no reasons given for being found ineligible, and why are Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) results so heavily redacted and vague?” the user asked.

As questions continue to circulate online, applicants and their supporters are calling for greater transparency about the eligibility process and the information provided to those whose applications are unsuccessful.
