Western Leopard Toad conservation efforts grow in Cape Town

A conservation effort across Cape Town is helping Western Leopard Toads navigate some of the dangers they face while making their way to breeding grounds.

In a recent post, Two Oceans Aquarium highlighted the people and organisations working to give the species a safer journey, including Kim and Imaan from Nature Connect and their Western Leopard Toad Underpass Project.

Creating safer ways to travel

The underpass project is designed to help Western Leopard Toads move underneath roads instead of crossing them.

By providing an alternative route, the initiative aims to reduce the number of toads injured or killed by vehicles as they travel between areas.

The project forms part of a broader conservation effort involving different kinds of work, from improving routes for the animals to helping them directly when they encounter danger.

Helping toads on the road

Some conservationists and volunteers are going out at night and driving kilometres to rescue Western Leopard Toads from busy roads.

Their efforts help the animals continue towards their breeding grounds rather than remaining exposed to passing traffic.

The work also includes clearing invasive vegetation, adding another element to the conservation activities taking place across Cape Town.

Many hands behind the effort

The project has brought together people with different skills and contributions.

Footage, filming, research, education and expertise have all played a role, alongside the people who have given their time to help the toads.

The work also highlights the connection between protecting the Western Leopard Toad and protecting the ecosystems it depends on.

For the people involved, each contribution forms part of a larger effort to help the species navigate Cape Town more safely.
