Journey ends, Unam FC learn valuable lessons

Unam FC’s CAF Confederation Cup journey has come to an end after the university side suffered a 3-1 defeat to Angolan outfit Kabuscorp FC in the second leg of their preliminary-round tie.

Unam, who lost 2-0 in the first leg, suffered a 5-1 aggregate defeat across the two legs, bringing their debut continental campaign to a close.

Despite the disappointing result, head coach Robert Nauseb said there were several positives to take from the competition, particularly the team’s approach and execution of the game plan.

“Look, we started very well. The boys played according to the game plan, the way we wanted them to. They executed the game plan. But look, against a team like Kabuscorp, when you create a chance, you need to put it away. If we had scored those two chances, the game would have turned out differently,” Nauseb said.

He added that the team lost its rhythm in the second half and made costly errors that allowed Kabuscorp to capitalise.

“And in the second half, we lost our rhythm and started running with the ball. Then we got caught on break attacks, which led to set pieces, you know. And look again, from a set piece against a team like Kabuscorp, you can’t make those types of mistakes at the back. And look, we suffered through that,” he said.

Lessons to be learned

Nauseb said the technical team would review the match footage to identify areas for improvement and urged the players to learn from their mistakes.

“It requires attention. We will get video of this match and analyse. The players need to learn from this,” he said.

Despite the early exit, Nauseb praised his players for their bravery and willingness to play from the opening whistle in both matches.

“They made me happy. They played the ball. In the first and second matches, they were braver and played from the word go. There are a lot of positives to take from here. The intensity is out of this,” he concluded.
