AFCON Qualifier: Martins Vows Madagascar Will Correct Mistakes Against Eagles

Madagascar head coach Corentin Martins has expressed disappointment over his side’s narrow defeat to Nigeria but promised that the team would correct its mistakes when the Super Eagles travel to Madagascar for the return fixture.

The Barea suffered a slim defeat against Nigeria in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying encounter in Uyo, with Martins admitting that his players struggled to cope with the pressure, particularly in the second half.

According to the coach, Madagascar defended resolutely for long periods but eventually conceded after coming under sustained pressure from the Super Eagles.

“We made some mistakes, especially in the second half, and we paid for them. We will look at what happened and correct those mistakes before the second leg,” Martins said.

Despite the defeat, the French tactician praised his players for their resilience and commitment throughout the encounter, saying they fought hard against a Nigerian side with considerable experience at the highest level.

Martins also acknowledged the physical and tactical quality of the Super Eagles, noting that several Nigerian players have experience playing for top clubs in major European leagues.

He said such experience gave Nigeria an advantage, particularly during crucial moments of the game.

“Our players showed a good spirit and fought until the end. We have to congratulate them for that,” he added.

“Nigeria have players who play in big clubs around the world. They have a lot of experience, both physically and tactically, and that made the game difficult for us.”

Martins, however, insisted that the result would not discourage Madagascar as the Barea prepare to welcome the Super Eagles for the return fixture.

He said his side would analyse the match carefully, identify areas that require improvement and approach the second leg with renewed determination.

The encounter forms part of the early race for qualification from Group L, with Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau battling for the available qualification places, while co-hosts Tanzania are already assured of a place at the 2027 tournament.
