Former editor challenges MP Ayuba to spend a night in prison to expose “horror” conditions

Former editor-in-chief of The Democrat and Times Media, Charles Simango, has issued a striking public challenge to Member of Parliament Sylvester Ayuba James, urging him to spend a full day and night inside one of Malawi’s most congested prisons as part of Parliament’s ongoing investigation into prison conditions.

In a Facebook post, Simango said the challenge was prompted by the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to identify prison conditions as one of the key issues to be investigated by Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee, of which Ayuba James is a member.

Simango argued that spending time inside a facility such as Zomba, Maula or Chichiri prison would allow the MP to witness firsthand the realities facing inmates, rather than relying solely on committee hearings and testimony from prison wardens.

He described some of the conditions reportedly faced by prisoners in stark terms, referencing the practice known as “shamba,” where inmates sleep on their sides, unable to turn due to lack of space, as well as sleeping on rough concrete floors said to wear through clothing within days, and inmates sometimes receiving only one meal a day.

“It’s a horror movie,” Simango wrote, arguing that regardless of guilt or innocence, prisoners remain people first and that a country’s character is ultimately judged by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens, including those behind bars.

Simango said he specifically challenged Ayuba James because he believes the MP’s pragmatic approach and willingness to take direct action make him uniquely suited to accept such a challenge, suggesting the lawmaker would likely agree that experiencing prison conditions firsthand is far more valuable than examining the issue solely through committee proceedings.

To sweeten the challenge, Simango pledged to make a donation to a cause of Ayuba James’s choosing should the MP take up the offer, noting the lawmaker’s existing community work supporting youth farmers and running a bursary scheme in his constituency.

He went on to invite members of the public to join him in pledging support, asking whether others would be willing to contribute funds for each hour the MP spends inside a prison facility, should he accept the challenge.
