HARARE does not do quiet goodbyes and if this weekend is anything to go by, August is leaving the way it arrived: on stage, under lights, with a crowd that showed up.
Two album launches, a comedy night, a pool party with a lineup that reads like a festival poster, and a season two premiere. Pick your vibe.
Friday, August 28
Friday belongs to Bhazi, whose Haritsike Arimugomo album finally gets its send-off at Steak House in Ardbennie. Mark Ngwazi headlines, Tamy Moyo joins as special guest and a deep supporting cast (Ndunge Yut, Shantel Sithole, Romeo Gasa, Gushungo, Simon Mutambi and Johns Kuyeri) fills out the night from 6pm till late.
Getting there is easy enough if you know the route: from the CBD, turn left at the Simon Mazorodze and Willowvale robots, just past Trade Centre. Entry starts at US$5 general, with VIP at US$50 and VVIP at US$100 for those who want the full experience.
If comedy is more your speed, Moto Republik on Allan Wilson Avenue is hosting New School Comedy at 7pm, with a stacked eleven-person lineup comprising Mike, Brendon, Patricia, Neville, Tinashe, Tino, Hupenyu, Chipenzi, Munya, David and Trust all taking turns at the mic. Entry is US$5, with a US$10 corkage fee if you are bringing drinks.
And if you would rather make a full day of it, Skyline River Resort on Beatrice Road (just past the Trabablas Interchange Tollgate, first service station on your left) opens its gates at 10am for Sane Wave Live on Stage. Performances only kick off at 5pm, so there is a full day of swimming and cooler-box lounging before Sane Wave, Holy Ten, Slyme Foxx, Icey Ekxne and KayFlow take over, with MC Criss K running the show and a six-deep DJ lineup — Yu-Bar The Big Daddy, Stalian, Rootar, Vitalis, Locco and Selectah Cuul — keeping the energy up between sets. Standard entry is US$5, VIP is US$10 and cooler boxes and swimming will each set you back an extra US$5 to US$10.
Saturday, August 29
Saturday has its own album launch to contend with, as Bagga’s Gorejena gets its moment at the Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza. Gates open at 5pm, and Bagga headlines a lineup deep enough to fill a festival day: Seh Calaz, Voltz JT, Jnr Spragga, Bling4, Blot, Hwinza, Mr Attention, Sane Wav, Kikky Badass, Pumacol, Mugaratia, Kadjah, Bazooka, Young Fantan and Natasha Muz. Early bird tickets are US$5 standard or US$10 VIP, available at Chicken Slice, the Aquatic Complex itself, or Shasha Home & Furniture.
Across town, Alex Sports Club opens its gates at 6pm for Tete A Tete Season 2, with Enzo Ishall, Nisha Ts, Xiba, Jnr Spragga, Runna Rulez, Hulengende and Culture Love on the bill. MC KVG, Merciless Zim and MC Gully share hosting duties, with DJ Fistroy, Don Family and DJ Fujee/Tats on the decks.
Between the two album launches, the comedy night and the pool party, this is a weekend built for people who cannot decide on just one thing to do. Pick a lane or if you have the stamina, try to catch a bit of everything.
