Manchester City Could Face Huge Points Deduction and Two Seasons in Championship

According to a report by The Sun on Monday October 19, 2026, Manchester City reportedly face a significant points deduction that could send them into the Championship, potentially forcing the English champions to spend two consecutive seasons outside the Premier League.

The club are awaiting the outcome of proceedings concerning more than 100 alleged financial rule breaches. An independent commission has reportedly found City guilty, although the club continues to deny any wrongdoing.

City have challenged the commission’s findings through an appeal, maintaining their position throughout the disciplinary process. The eventual decision could have serious consequences for the club’s future and standing in English football.

According to reports from the Daily Mail, Premier League officials are pushing to announce the punishment before the outcome of Manchester City’s appeal becomes public, potentially increasing uncertainty surrounding the club.

A substantial points deduction is reportedly considered a likely punishment. Such a sanction could leave City struggling to remain in the Premier League, making relegation almost unavoidable depending on the number of points deducted.

However, the report suggests the consequences might extend beyond a single season. City could potentially receive another points deduction, which would leave them competing in the Championship for an additional campaign.

Despite the possibility of severe sporting consequences, expelling Manchester City from the Premier League entirely is reportedly considered unlikely. Such a decision could create unprecedented complications for the English Football League and its competition structure.

If the reported punishment is eventually confirmed, City would face a significant rebuilding process, potentially reshaping their squad, finances and ambitions while attempting to return to the highest level of English football.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has also discussed the situation, while SunSport journalist Martin Lipton has reportedly called for an 80-point deduction alongside a £100 million fine. However, City’s final punishment remains unconfirmed.
