Today’s Headlines: Atiku Can’t Be Trusted — Wike; Hunye Meets Obasanjo Over Ogun APC Ticket

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has questioned African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar’s credibility ahead of the 2027 general elections. Speaking on Tuesday at the unveiling of the Wike-led Rainbow Coalition’s preferred candidates in Rivers State, held at Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, Wike also questioned the political strength of opposition parties in the state.

Wike, who contested against Atiku in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary ahead of the 2023 election, accused the former vice-president of making inconsistent promises. Recalling their political relationship since 2019, he said he had been one of the major sponsors of Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign. Wike stated that Atiku could not be trusted to keep his word, alleging that his statements frequently changed from morning to evening.

A faction of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in Osun State has disowned individuals listed as representatives of opposition political parties in the Osun Presidential Campaign Council for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu, led by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The faction said the individuals named as its members in the Presidential Campaign Council were not authorised by the group to represent it.

This was contained in a statement signed and released on Tuesday by leaders of 11 political parties with representatives in the state.

The parties that signed the statement are the Action Alliance, National Rescue Movement, Action Democratic Party, Nigerian Democratic Congress, Social Democratic Party and National Democratic Party.

The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has called on the National Assembly and the federal government to increase the derivation allocation to oil-producing states from the current minimum of 13 per cent to 50 per cent.

PANDEF said the increase would enable oil-producing states and communities to address environmental degradation, health hazards and developmental challenges associated with oil and gas exploration and production.

The group made the demand in a communiqué read by Godknows Igali, the national chairman of its National Executive Committee, after the committee and the Board of Trustees met virtually on Tuesday.

The meeting brought together former governors, former ministers, first-class traditional rulers, political leaders, opinion leaders and other stakeholders from the six South-south states: Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo and Rivers.
