Top 10 African Countries With The Biggest Hydroelectric Dams In 2026

10. Nigeria, Kainji Dam, 760 Megawatts

Nigeria's Kainji Dam sits on the Niger River and was commissioned back in 1968, making it one of the oldest hydroelectric plants on this entire list. It once carried the pride of West Africa's energy ambitions. Turbine issues, sedimentation, and years of underinvestment now keep it running below its original potential, but it still powers rural electrification efforts and remains part of Nigeria's national grid.

9. Ghana, Akosombo Dam, 1,020 Megawatts

Ghana's Akosombo Dam went live in 1965 on the Volta River and created Lake Volta, one of the largest man made lakes on the planet. The dam once exported power to neighboring Benin and Togo. Rising demand at home has since squeezed that surplus, and power sharing has become a genuine strain rather than a footnote.

8. Ethiopia, Tekeze Dam, 1,200 Megawatts

Ethiopia's Tekeze Dam sits in the Tigray region and holds the title of one of Africa's tallest double arch dams. Commissioned in 2009, it feeds directly into Ethiopia's national grid despite sitting in a region that has dealt with serious political and logistical strain in recent years.

7. Sudan, Merowe Dam, 1,250 Megawatts

Sudan's Merowe Dam opened in 2009 on the Nile River and stands as the country's single largest electricity source. It was built specifically to cut Sudan's dependence on expensive imported fossil fuels, and it now powers both agriculture and the urban centers strung along the Nile.

6. Zambia And Zimbabwe, Kariba Dam, 1,626 Megawatts

The Kariba Dam sits on the Zambezi River and stands as one of Africa's few binational power stations, shared directly between Zambia and Zimbabwe. Aging infrastructure and falling water levels have put real pressure on its output in recent years, yet it remains a critical power source for both countries.

5. Democratic Republic Of Congo, Inga I And Inga II, 1,775 Megawatts

The Inga Dams sit on the Congo River, widely considered one of the most promising untapped hydroelectric locations on earth. Plans for a much larger Inga III and an even bigger Grand Inga project have circled for decades. Political instability and financing gaps have kept those bigger dreams stuck on paper.

4. Ethiopia, Gilgel Gibe III Dam, 1,870 Megawatts

Ethiopia's second entry on this list sits on the Omo River and went fully operational in 2016. Gibe III represents Ethiopia's broader ambition to dominate the continent's power map, though the project has drawn real criticism over its downstream impact on Kenya's Lake Turkana and the communities that depend on it.

3. Mozambique, Cahora Bassa Dam, 2,070 Megawatts

Mozambique's Cahora Bassa Dam sits on the Zambezi River and has been running since the 1970s, somehow surviving the country's brutal civil war along the way. Most of its output gets exported straight to South Africa, making it one of Mozambique's single largest sources of foreign exchange earnings.

2. Egypt, Aswan High Dam, 2,100 Megawatts

Egypt's Aswan High Dam went live in 1970 and instantly became a symbol of the country's self reliance. It tamed the Nile's floods, irrigated farmland across the country, and created Lake Nasser, one of the largest reservoirs on the planet. It now generates only a small slice of Egypt's total energy mix, but its symbolic weight has never faded.

1. Ethiopia, Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, 6,450 Megawatts

Ethiopia takes the top spot by a massive margin, and the number genuinely does not look real at first glance. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam sits on the Blue Nile and produces more capacity than several other countries on this list combined. Construction began in 2011, and once it reaches full output, GERD is expected to supply power well beyond Ethiopia's own borders, reaching into East and North Africa. Ethiopia now holds three separate entries on this list, more than any other country on the continent.
