The Damara King’s Council has extended their condolences to the family, Damara community and Namibians at large for the passing of late veteran politician Simson Tjongarero.

His family confirmed that Tjongarero (83) died at home in Usakos on Wednesday morning, after a short illness.

A press statement issued by the council yesterday describes his passing as a devastating loss to the whole nation. “He made immeasurable contributions to nation building, peace, stability and the advancement of Damara affairs and the Namibian nation.”

He is credited as a man of wisdom, humility, dedication and commitment to the people, and he will be remembered with great respect and gratitude.

Tjongarero was born in March 1943 in Usakos, Erongo region. He completed his matriculation and earned a primary school teacher certificate. Before his involvement in politics, he was a teacher by profession.

The veteran politician served as a prominent founding member of the United Democratic Front party in 1992 and also as a regional representative for the Khorixas constituency from 1992 to 1998.

From 2010 to 2015, when everyone thought he was on retirement, he made a historic political come back at the age of 67, placing second on the UDF party list behind Chief Justus ||Garoeb. While in Parliament, he contributed to several legislative bodies, including the standing committee on economics, natural resources, and public administration. He was also a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union National Group.

The late Tjongarero is a former governor of Kunene region.
