Peter Obi’s Wife is Godmother of My Daughter Not Her Husband – Nonye Soludo Insists

The First Lady of Anambra State, Nonye Soludo, has refuted claims by Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi that he and his wife are godparents to her children.

In a statement issued by her media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe, Mrs Soludo stressed that only Obi’s wife was designated as godmother to her daughter, citing Catholic canon law which recognizes baptismal sponsorship as an individual responsibility.

She explained: “If a woman is chosen as the godmother of a child, her husband does not automatically become the child’s godfather simply because she is married to her. Marriage does not transfer the canonical role of sponsor from one spouse to the other.”

Mrs Soludo criticized attempts to reinterpret Catholic practice for political purposes, insisting that the Church’s rules are precise and recorded in baptismal registers.

She urged Obi’s supporters to avoid misrepresenting religious traditions, adding that social interpretations cannot override official Church doctrine.
