These retirement-friendly South African cruises are affordable
With travel costs rising, it may be time to consider a cruise.

When you reach retirement age, it makes sense to enjoy the golden years.
After decades in the workforce, it’s time to relax and explore.
But sometimes the budget can get in the way. Thankfully, cruises offer an affordable way to travel.
Affordable Cruises Offer All-Inclusive Holidays
With a cruise, you get accommodation, excursions, and food for one price.
For these reasons, cruises have become especially popular among retirees.
In South Africa, the most affordable cruises depart from Durban’s Nelson Mandela port.
From here, you can spend as little as R5 458 for an all-inclusive 4-night cruise to Mozambique.
Other cruises from the Nelson Mandela port include a 2-night round trip out to sea starting at R5 534.
Then there’s also a 3-night one-way trip to Cape Town starting at R5 889 per person.
Cape Town also has affordable cruises, just far fewer than Durban. These are local cruises or sea trips.
The most affordable cruise from Cape Town on MSC is a 3-night one-way cruise to Durban. The starting price is R6 401 per person.
Travelling to international waters from Cape Town, the cheapest cruise is a round-trip to Walvis Bay, Namibia. The 5-night cruise includes 2 days in Walvis Bay and starts at R12 235 per person.
For R8 068 from Durban, you can book a 4-night cruise to Mozambique that stops at two ports: Pomene and Portuguese Island.
Well-heeled travellers can explore more.
A one-way MSC Grand Voyages departs Durban on 1 April 2027 and journeys to Italy. The 26-day cruise includes stops in Reunion, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Jordan, Egypt and Greece.
However, this trip costs R37 441 per person.
Cruising Affordably
To get an affordable cruise, look for last-minute deals.
You can save up to 30% by booking a cruise with one month’s notice.
That’s especially true if you couldn’t get an early-bird special.
Take the 4-night round-trip to Pomene, Mozambique. It costs R5 548 if you book for November. However, for a December booking, the costs jump to R7 668.
To further reduce your cruise costs, don’t buy packages if it’s your first time cruising. Rather, book a short, cheap cruise to test the waters.
Then, if you want to book future cruises, think about what you’ve learned from your first trip.
There are some standard packages that can make financial sense. Drink packages, for example, can make sense if they include bottled water.
You can also make the most out of your trip by analysing:
The Itinerary: Where are you stopping, how long will you be there, and what can you do?
Ask these questions before booking. The destination can be just as exciting as the journey. If it’s in a place you want to visit and the ship is docked for hours, you can venture farther than the port.
Number of Occupants: In South Africa, the MSC cruise ships operating (Armonia and Sinfonia) have a similar occupancy limit. They range from 976 to 990 occupants.
Ship size: How large is the ship? South Africa has access to two ships of roughly the same size. However, each is arranged differently. You might prefer one over the other.
