SMEDCO buys tomatoes from farmers

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Corporation (SMEDCO) has started buying tomatoes from farmers.

SMEDCO says the tomatoes will be kept at its factory in Phalombe for up to six months before being sold when the crop becomes scarce on the market.

“We will preserve the tomatoes for six months and release it on the market when it becomes scarce,” SMEDCO said.

The corporation says it will also process some of the tomatoes into tomato sauce and other products.

The move is aimed at helping farmers sell their produce and reducing losses during the tomato harvesting season.
