The man alleged to have shot dead his ex-wife, a Midlands State University (MSU) student, has broken his silence in a lengthy statement posted on a Facebook account bearing his name.
Godknows Muleya is wanted by police after 25-year-old Lisedi Nkomo was allegedly shot in the forehead at about 5.30 pm on Thursday at Number 1082, Senga KMP, in Gweru.
Nkomo, a Level Four, First Semester student at MSU, died at the scene. Muleya, described as a director of a Bulawayo-based security company, allegedly fled afterwards.
The shooting left four other students traumatised. According to the caretaker of the boarding house, Blessing Nkomo, the students were threatened, had their phones confiscated and thrown into a bathtub, and were locked in the same room where Lisedi was shot. They were later freed by police who forced the door open with a crowbar after the caretaker returned from town with officers.
In the statement, Muleya does not directly address the allegations against him but offers a detailed account of his relationship with Nkomo, expressing what he describes as genuine love, sorrow and regret.
“Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I am writing this message not to cause more pain or to destroy anyone’s reputation, but to speak from my heart, express my sorrow, and bring some form of closure to a chapter of my life that has meant so much to me,” the post begins.
He writes that their relationship faced challenges from the start, including difficulties involving both families. He says he approached Nkomo’s family and took steps to fulfil traditional obligations in an effort to be accepted.
“When Lesedi fell pregnant, I knew my responsibilities had grown, and I wanted to stand by her and our child,” he says.
Muleya also reveals a complicated personal history. He acknowledges that when he became involved with Nkomo, he was still married to a woman named Kimberly.
“I acknowledge that the circumstances were complicated, and I do not pretend that I handled everything perfectly. I was going through a painful period in my life,” he writes, adding that Nkomo later asked him to end his previous relationship for her own sense of security, which he says he did.
He recalls the birth of their son as a defining memory.
“One memory I will never forget is the day our son, Jordan Angels Muleya, was born. I stood beside Lesedi in the theatre throughout the delivery procedure, supporting her until the very end,” he says.
According to the post, the relationship was marked by repeated break-ups and reconciliations, advice from friends and relatives to walk away, and what he describes as accusations, misunderstandings and emotional struggles.
“Sometimes things would improve for a short while, only for us to return to the same painful cycle. We would stop talking for days, and just when I began accepting the distance, my love for her would draw me back,” he writes.
Muleya says he is not seeking to portray himself as blameless.
“I am not writing this message to portray myself as a saint or Lesedi as a bad person. I have made mistakes, and I take responsibility for my part in everything that happened. There are things I regret, and I know that I may have hurt her in ways I did not fully understand at the time.”
He ends with a tribute to Nkomo and an appeal for forgiveness from both families.
“Lesedi Nkomo, may your soul rest in eternal peace. May the Lord receive your soul, comfort everyone mourning your passing, and grant strength to both the Nkomo and Muleya families during this difficult time,” he writes.
“To the Nkomo and Muleya families, I humbly ask for forgiveness for any pain, disappointment, or embarrassment I may have caused.”
He adds: “I loved. I tried. I made mistakes. I am grieving. But above all, I am human, and I am trusting God to give me strength through this pain.”
The killing has left an infant son, understood to be eight or nine months old, without a mother. The caretaker said the child is currently staying with his paternal grandmother.
Police said the circumstances surrounding the relationship and the shooting remain under investigation and Muleya is still being sought.
