Ugandan ’Iron Lady’ coming to spice up Serengeti Rally challenge

MOROGORO: UGANDA’S Susan Muwonge is set to pose a stiff challenge to Tanzanian established clubs; ASAS and Mkwawa teams heading to Serengeti Rally of Tanzania in Morogoro this weekend.

Muwonge, the former Uganda champion, will be supported Musa Nsubuga alongside, Oscar Ntambi and Pius Luggya, as well as Godfrey Nsereko and Bosco Musisi.

The rally, which forms part of the Africa Rally Championship (ARC), is expected to attract a strong international field featuring experienced crews from across Africa and beyond.

Serengeti Rally of Tanzania is the fourth and final round of this year’s African Rally Championship after three previous rounds in Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda.

Among the notable continental level wheelers include the two-time African Champion, Karan Patel from Kenya, who will be navigated by Touseef Khan, alongside Kenya’s Akif Viran and Zahir Shah.

Defending champions Yassin Nasser and Ally Katumba from Uganda will also return to defend their title.

India Sub continent will also be represented by Naveen Pulligila and Musa Sharif, according to the event’s Clerk of the Course, Dr Mosi Makau

According to Dr Makau, Serengeti Rally of Tanzania is fully set to take place from October 1 to 4, 2026, and all arrangements have been completed ahead of four days of rally action.

He said the rally will cover approximately 250 kilometres in total, including 186.81 kilometres of competitive distance, with demanding stages designed to test the speed, skill and endurance of participating crews.

The event will begin on Thursday, October 1, with crews undertaking reconnaissance of all the rally stages. During the recce, drivers and co-drivers will familiarise themselves with the routes and prepare their pace notes ahead of the competition.

On Friday, October 2, crews will take part in Free Practice, followed by the Qualifying Stage. The day will conclude with the official Ceremonial Start in the evening.

Competition will intensify on Saturday with two stages — Ruaha, covering 13.35 kilometres, and Serengeti, covering 16.25 kilometres. Both stages will be repeated three times before crews complete the day with a 2.40-kilometre Super Special Stage. Saturday’s competitive distance will total approximately 91.20 kilometres.

On Sunday, crews will tackle the Kilimanjaro Stage, measuring 22.36 kilometres and one of the longest stages of the rally, followed by the Ngorongoro Stage, covering 9.51 kilometres. Both stages will also be repeated three times.

All competitive stages will be held within areas managed by the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS).

Speaking during the launch, Mkwawa Group Director of Relations Richard Sinamtwa called on rally fans and the public to turn out in large numbers and support the event.

Sinamtwa said the rally provides an opportunity for the public to experience high-level motorsport while also creating opportunities for businesses and communities to benefit from the increased activity surrounding the event.
