The Floodwaters That Came In The Dark: How Flash Floods Left Ebonyi Community Devastated

Chinasa Emmanuel, a nursing mother, woke to find her feet submerged. With floodwaters rising around her home, there was little time to think. She lifted her baby onto her chest, gathered her other children, and began dragging them through the rising tide, all in darkness.

“I woke up to my feet covered in water. My biggest fear was my baby. I carried her on my chest and dragged my other children through the rising tide in the dark,” Chinasa told Channels Television.

Chinasa Emmanuel, a nursing mother, says the recent flash floods in her community have left her with no food, no clean water to drink, and no home.

By morning, there was no home to return to in the way she knew it. Chinasa and her children spent the night under an open canopy on high ground, surrounded by mosquitoes, with no food, no clean drinking water, and nowhere to go.

“We have no food, no clean water to drink, and nowhere to go,” she said.

As the floodwaters slowly recede across affected areas of Ebonyi State, stories like Chinasa’s are beginning to emerge from communities that spent days cut off from help. Here, the retreating water is revealing another crisis: for some families, surviving the flood was only the beginning.



In Ohaozara Local Government Area, one rural hamlet remained isolated for days after last week’s torrential downpour.

Hidden from the much-needed attention by geographical isolation and a critical lack of basic infrastructure, the extent of the devastation remained largely out of sight.

Troubled Community

Reaching Ohuegu Mgbom N’Achara, a remote village nestled in Okposi, Ohaozara Local Government Area, takes nearly two hours of difficult navigation through rugged terrain, dense bush paths, and flash floods.

Locals affected by the flash floods are forced to navigate their community with a canoe.

Already battling systemic neglect with no motorable access roads, electricity, clean drinking water, telecommunications coverage, or basic schools, the community was dealt a devastating blow on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Flash floods surged through the village, washing away homes, submerging expansive farmlands, and leaving families stranded.

Reaching the displaced villagers required a 56-minute trek through thick bush paths to the riverbank, followed by a perilous 29-minute canoe crossing, and another 47-minute walk through swampy ruins.

Upon arrival, the atmosphere was heavy with grief and despair, while vast tracts of cassava, yam, and essential cash crops, the sole economic lifeline of the villagers, lay ruined beneath thick layers of mud.

**We Couldn’t Save Anything **

Displaced residents, left without basic shelter or sustenance, recalled the terrifying moment the waters surged overnight.

“Before we knew what was happening, our houses were filled to the brim,” said John Ogonna, a resident of Mgbom N’Achara. “We couldn’t save anything- our harvested crops, our clothes; everything went with the flood. We are just holding onto life.”

Another resident, Aja Okoro, said his house was destroyed by the impact of the flash flood in the community.

“For three days after the rain, nobody knew what we were passing through because there was no way in or out. Hunger is killing our children as all our cassava farms are buried in mud.”

John Ogonna, a resident of Mgbom N’Achara, says residents of the community are holding on to life.

Beyond immediate emergency relief, community leaders said that their geographic isolation compounded the disaster, pleading with state and federal authorities to construct vital access roads and bridges to reconnect them to the rest of the state.

Aja Okoro says the community has been plagued by hunger.

But Udeh Chukwu-Obaji, who is Secretary of the Mgbom N’Achara Community Development Union, said that the tragedy has exposed the extreme vulnerability of the people.

“Emergency relief bags will help us survive today, but what we need most is access. We are appealing directly to Governor Francis Nwifuru and the Federal Government to build an access road and a bridge connecting Ohuegu Mgbom N’Achara.”

“Without roads, even when help is sent, it cannot reach us on time,” Chukwu-Obaji said.

Udeh Chukwu-Obaji, who is Secretary of the Mgbom N’Achara Community Development Union, said that the tragedy has exposed the extreme vulnerability of our people.

Govt Intervention

Responding to the widespread distress across affected areas, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, approved emergency intervention funds to cushion the hardship faced by impacted communities.

Speaking on the government’s response, the Commissioner for Human Capital Development, Ann Aligwe, disclosed that over 180 families had been officially recorded as displaced in the affected zones.

She assured that the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (ESEMA) was intensifying field assessments to deploy relief materials swiftly.

“His Excellency, the Executive Governor, has already directed the immediate release of funds and materials to cater to those displaced by the flood. Over 180 households have been identified so far, and ESEMA teams are working tirelessly to reach every affected pocket,” Aligwe said.

“While we had previously issued early warnings for residents in low-lying areas to relocate, we are not leaving anyone behind. Relief packages, food, bedding, and medical support will reach them.”

State officials maintain that structured humanitarian assistance would reach the most vulnerable in the coming days to alleviate the severe economic and emotional toll.

However, for the residents of Ohuegu Mgbom N’Achara, true recovery depends not just on temporary aid packages, but on permanent infrastructure to ensure they are never left stranded in the dark again.
