Stablecoin vs Bitcoin: An Honest Guide for Business

Bitcoin for treasury, stablecoins for payments. That rule fits most of what a business does with either asset, and it fails in two places. It treats Bitcoin’s volatility as a one-way risk, and it treats a stablecoin as a permanent hedge against the naira.

Bitcoin swings in both directions, and the naira has gained about 9% on the dollar over the past 12 months. Below are the four differences that matter, the job each asset fits, and a way to skip the choice.

Bitcoin vs stablecoins: 4 differences that matter to a business

The comparison runs on four dimensions: price stability, accountability, settlement, and risk. Each is easier to judge with numbers than with adjectives.

Bitcoin

Fiat-backed stablecoin (USDT, USDC)

Price

Set by open-market supply and demand Designed to track $1, can briefly lose the peg

Accountability

No issuer, rules enforced by the network Named issuer, reserves, redemption terms

Settlement

One chain, a block about every 10 minutes Minutes, around the clock, several networks

Main risk

Market risk Counterparty and reserve risk

Price stability, and what “stable” costs

Bitcoin’s price moves a lot. It peaked near $126,000 in October 2025 and traded at about $81,400 on October 20, 2026, a fall of roughly 35%.

The same swing shows up at day scale. A poster on a Nigerian Bitcointalk thread said an employee paid in Bitcoin “could lose 3-5% of its value within a day.” A second poster replied that the payment “could also gain extra 2 to 5%.” Neither figure is measured data, but both describe the mechanism: you don’t know what the payment is worth until you convert it.

A fiat-backed stablecoin such as USDT or USDC is designed to track the US dollar at roughly 1:1. Circle says USDC’s reserves are cash and short-duration US Treasuries. For a business choosing between the two, USDC or USDT is its own decision.

Stable does not mean risk-free. In March 2023, Circle disclosed that $3.3 billion of USDC reserves, about 8% of the total, sat at the failed Silicon Valley Bank, and USDC briefly lost its dollar peg. Stable means lower volatility, not zero risk.

Who’s accountable: no one, or a named company

Bitcoin has no issuer. A decentralized network of nodes and miners enforces its rules through proof of work, which is the mechanism behind the Bitcointalk line that “Bitcoin is trusted.” For stablecoins, the same poster wrote, “that trust is placed [on]the people that introduced it.”

A stablecoin’s soundness depends on its issuer, reserves, reporting, and redemption terms. In the US, the GENIUS Act requires covered issuers to publish a monthly reserve report, examined by a registered accounting firm and certified by the CEO and CFO. That is an attestation, which is narrower than a full audit.

Control is the other difference. On April 23, 2026, Tether froze $344 million in USDT across two addresses, in coordination with OFAC and US law enforcement. OFAC sanctioned the same two wallets the next day as property of Iran’s central bank. Bitcoin has no issuer to flip that switch.

With a stablecoin, a business trusts both the blockchain and the company running it. With Bitcoin, trust sits with the network. These are different dependencies, and neither is lighter.

Settlement speed and what it does to reconciliation

Bitcoin payments can appear almost instantly, but they are final only once included in a block, and blocks arrive about every 10 minutes. Businesses often wait for several confirmations on large payments. Lightning is faster, but most counterparties don’t use it by default.

Stablecoins settle in minutes, including weekends and bank holidays, across several networks. Breet’s crypto payment API, for example, accepts USDT and USDC on TRC20, ERC20, Solana, BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Arbitrum, and Base.

Tax reconciliation differs too. In Nigeria, individuals pay income tax of 0% to 25% on crypto gains, measured in dollars between purchase and sale. A dollar-pegged stablecoin usually produces little or no dollar gain, and sales of USDT and USDC are exempt from the 1% withholding that applies to Bitcoin and Ether.

A Bitcoin payment can create a taxable gain between the day you receive it and the day you sell. Companies follow separate corporate rules, so confirm treatment with your accountant.

Risk profile: market risk vs counterparty risk, not “risky vs safe”

Bitcoin’s main risk here is market risk. The payment’s value can rise or fall before you sell, and the same move produces either a loss or a gain.

A stablecoin moves the risk instead of removing it. The concerns become counterparty and reserve risk: whether the issuer holds what it claims, how transparent the reserves are, how fast holders can redeem, and whether the issuer can freeze an address.

Stablecoins also come up for paying teams. Payroll brings legal, tax, and labor questions outside this comparison.

When your own currency is the one gaining

A stablecoin protects a business from local-currency depreciation only while the local currency is depreciating. Over the past year, the naira has not been.

USD/NGN traded at ₦1,330.43 on October 20, 2026, and the naira has strengthened 9.23% against the dollar over 12 months. It has been flat for the last month (0.02%). Trading Economics’ model expects ₦1,308.80 in 12 months, so treat further gains as a forecast.

A Bitcointalk poster flagged the mechanism in September, when the rate sat near ₦1,370. Holding 500 USDT loses naira value if the rate falls to ₦1,200, and “the only time that the USDT will be preferable is when the rate of naira is [depreciating].”

Run the numbers on a business that converts ₦13.3 million into $10,000 of USDT at ₦1,330 and holds it. At the forecast ₦1,308.80, the position is worth ₦13,088,000, about ₦212,000 less before fees. If the naira slid back to ₦1,500 instead, the same $10,000 would be worth ₦15 million, ₦1.7 million more. Both outcomes are a bet on direction.

This leaves the case for stablecoins as a payment rail intact. If a customer pays in USDT and the business converts right away, the naira’s direction tomorrow barely matters. The exposure appears when stablecoins sit as a standing treasury position.

Which one, for which job

“Bitcoin or stablecoin?” is four separate decisions.

Paying a supplier abroad: stablecoin, in most cases. If the supplier invoices in dollars, a dollar-pegged stablecoin removes the exchange-rate gap between invoice and payment, and it settles outside banking hours.

Holding treasury float: depends on currency direction. If your currency is depreciating, dollars preserve purchasing power. If it is strengthening, holding dollars costs you, as the ₦212,000 example above shows. Check the direction before defaulting to “hold stablecoins for safety.”

Accepting a customer’s payment: either works. What matters is the next step. If you convert on arrival, the asset the customer sent never becomes treasury.

Wanting long-term Bitcoin exposure: Bitcoin, on purpose. The price of that upside is drawdowns like the 35% fall above, which can land when you need cash. Hold only money you can leave untouched through one.

You don’t have to pick a side to settle the transaction

None of those four jobs requires holding either asset, as long as the payment converts to fiat when it lands. For many businesses, the need is simple: the customer wants to pay in Bitcoin or a stablecoin, and the business wants naira, cedis, or dollars in its account.

Settle automatically, in fiat, the moment either asset lands

With our Crypto and Stablecoin Payment API, a customer’s deposit of Bitcoin, USDT, USDC, or another supported asset is detected on-chain and converted. With auto-settlement on, it is paid to a linked bank account. With it off, it sits as a USD, NGN, or GHS balance until you withdraw. You can set this per wallet address or business-wide.

A webhook fires the moment a transaction is detected on-chain, so your system can fulfill the order without anyone checking a dashboard. The platform has 100+ verified businesses, 3M+ transactions settled programmatically, and a 99.9% uptime SLA.

Access dollars through stablecoins without carrying a treasury position

A business that needs dollars for a supplier does not have to hold USDT or USDC in between. The API gives import and export teams an interface to convert NGN, USD, or GHS to USDT or USDC and back for supplier payments, bypassing dollar scarcity and the parallel market.

For large trades, our OTC desk locks the rate before execution, so the market can’t move against you mid-trade. Settlement lands the same hour in NGN, GHS, USD, USDT, or USDC. Settling in USDT or USDC is the option for businesses that want dollar-denominated float. The desk is built for large volumes, not routine top-ups, and minimum sizes depend on the asset and currency.

Reconcile the same way no matter which asset shows up

If one customer pays in Bitcoin and another in USDT, finance should not need two processes. The API generates a wallet address per customer or per transaction, with bank details and a label attached at creation. Deposits to that address auto-settle to the right account.

That means no manual matching and no guessing which invoice a payment belongs to, whichever asset landed.

Check the direction, then convert

Bitcoin carries market risk. A stablecoin carries issuer and reserve risk, plus currency-direction risk when you hold it against a strengthening naira. Neither label, “risky” or “safe,” tells you what to do with a payment.

Start with this today: pull your last 90 days of crypto payments. For each one, note how long it sat before conversion and what the rate did in that window. If the gap is days and the rate moved against you, turn on auto-settlement.

Two limits apply. We convert crypto and don’t custody it, so Bitcoin you want to hold for years belongs in your own wallet or with a custodian. And Breet is not a payroll platform.
