2027: Imo Government Reacts To Court Judgment on Governor Uzodimma, Reveals Next Move
AI summary
According to a report by Channels Television on Thursday, October 29, 2026, the Imo State Government has rejected the Federal High Court judgment declaring former governor Rochas Okorocha the winner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary for Imo West Senatorial District, vowing to challenge the decision at the Court of Appeal.
The state Commissioner for Information, Declan Emelumba, made this known in a statement on Thursday, describing the judgment as “a complete travesty of justice.”
Emelumba said the government would pursue available legal options to overturn the ruling and recover what it considers its mandate in the dispute over the APC senatorial ticket.
He also accused the trial judge of disregarding existing Supreme Court decisions on the appropriate procedure for handling cases involving allegations of forgery and perjury.
According to the commissioner, the court had been presented with relevant Supreme Court judgments but proceeded to deliver its decision based on affidavit evidence that he alleged was founded on forged documents.
Emelumba further argued that the case should have been dismissed because Okorocha allegedly failed to file it within the 14-day period prescribed for challenging the outcome of a primary election.
He cited the Supreme Court decision in Orji v Chima, claiming that Okorocha filed his case on August 13, 2026, about 87 days after the APC primary held on May 18.
The commissioner maintained that the government would use the judicial process to seek the reversal of the judgment.
The controversy followed Thursday’s ruling by Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The judge held that Okorocha won the majority of votes cast during the APC primary and ordered the party to submit his name to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as its candidate for the January 16, 2027 Imo West senatorial election.
The court also directed Governor Hope Uzodimma to stop presenting himself as the party’s candidate for the election.
