NaFAA Secures US$325,000 FAO Grant
AI summary
Monrovia, October 30, 2026: The National Fisheries & Aquaculture Authority Republic of Liberia has secured a US$325,000 grant from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under its Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) to support the construction of an improved Fish Sales Hub in Congo Town, Monrovia.
The proposed facility will feature a 20-tonne-capacity cooling room, hygienic waste management, specially equipped cooling motorbike delivery services, smart-energy systems, fishmonger training, and a mini seafood grill outlet.
The initiative will strengthen market access for artisanal fisherfolk, aquaculture farmers, and inland fisheries producers, while helping reduce post-harvest losses and improving consumers’ access to quality fish harvested from Liberian waters.
Part of the grant will also support the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences at the University of Liberia in developing a Small-Scale Fisheries Guideline and relevant curriculum, training modules, and syllabi.
The Fish Sales Hub is expected to operate under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model to attract private capital, encourage innovation, and promote sustainable commercial operations.
NaFAA warmly welcomes this partnership with FAO as we work together to build a stronger, more inclusive, and resilient fisheries sector- creating opportunities for local producers, businesses, and consumers.
Investing in Fisheries. Reducing Losses. Creating Opportunities. Empowering Liberian Fishers.
