(NC) Caring for someone with a chronic disease like arthritis can be a significant life change,
for both the person receiving care and the person providing it. Sometimes it can feel like
making a difficult journey with no roadmap, but it’s one that others have made before. Here
are a few key tips from Arthritis Society Canada to help make caregiving more supportive for
everyone:
-
DON’T make assumptions
Even if you know someone well, you can’t always know what they need. Have open
conversations about the kind of help they want and how they’d like to receive it.
-
DO ask for permission
Give the person receiving care the opportunity to lead whenever possible. For example, ask before helping with
personal tasks or moving an assistive device.
-
DON’T expect every day to be the same
Providing care can be unpredictable, even with a regular care schedule and routine in place. Arthritis symptoms,
energy levels and plans can all change. Leave room for flexibility and try not to judge a difficult day—yours or
theirs.
-
DO go with the flow
Caregiving rarely goes exactly according to plan. When things change, take a breath and focus on what’s needed
in the moment. When you have a good day together, enjoy it.
-
DON’T get to the point of burnout
Feeling constantly overwhelmed, irritable, frustrated or physically and emotionally exhausted can be signs that
you need more support. Don’t wait until you’re running on empty to ask for help.
-
DO make time for yourself
You won’t be much help to others if you aren’t able to maintain your own well-being first. Taking scheduled
breaks, keeping active with your own hobbies and interests and maintaining friendships can all help to alleviate
the stress involved in providing care for others.
-
DON’T withhold care
As a caregiver, you may sometimes feel overwhelmed or not in the mood to do a certain task. Frustration is a
normal emotion, but the person receiving care still deserves dignity, respect and care.
-
DO communicate
Talk openly about what’s working, what isn’t and what each of you expects. Addressing concerns early can help
prevent misunderstandings and resentment on both sides.
-
Remember that you don’t have to do everything perfectly to be a good caregiver. The most important things are to listen, respect boundaries, stay flexible and recognize when you or the person you’re caring for need support.
