Members of Morocco’s community in Spain have condemned the tearing of the Moroccan flag during demonstrations this week against the Spanish government’s migration policies, accusing far-right political forces of exploiting issues involving Morocco for domestic political gain.
Said Bourhim, a Moroccan civil society activist living in Spain, told Hespress AR that Spain’s far right had “crossed all red lines” by targeting Morocco’s national symbols in its pursuit of political gains.
Bourhim said the incident had raised questions among Moroccans about how best to respond to what he described as repeated provocations, while stressing his confidence in Morocco’s state institutions to address the issue.
He said Spain’s far right was primarily focused on bringing down Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government and urged Moroccan civil society in Spain to exercise caution to avoid having its response exploited by other political actors.
“The Moroccan community in Spain is being cautious at the moment and is taking its time before responding to these provocations,” Bourhim said, adding that he believed the matter should primarily be addressed through Morocco’s official institutions.
Ramadan Massoud, a Moroccan resident of Spain and president of the Sahrawi Association for the Defense of Human Rights in Madrid, also condemned the tearing of the Moroccan flag and attacks on national symbols.
He described such acts as unacceptable behavior by a minority associated with Spain’s far right, while arguing that most Spanish political forces maintain respectful relations with Morocco and its institutions.
Massoud said some radical groups repeatedly seek to fuel tensions between Rabat and Madrid by using migration as a political pressure tool and to appeal to public sentiment.
He stressed that the demonstrations in Madrid did not represent Spanish society as a whole, describing them instead as the actions of fringe political groups.
Massoud said attempts to use migration and other Morocco-related issues for narrow political agendas would not fundamentally alter what he described as the generally positive relationship between Morocco and Spain.
He added that both countries had a shared interest in regional stability and in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
