Broda Shaggi: Stray bullet, surgeries, fear of losing his leg, other revelations from his 7-month absence

For months, questions followed every mention of his name. Where was Broda Shaggi? Why had one of Nigeria’s most active skitmakers suddenly gone quiet? And what had happened during the long period when his familiar face disappeared from social media?

The answers began to emerge in October, after months of silence and a brief return that left more questions than answers.

On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the skitmaker finally told his story.

March 9: The Day Everything Changed

Broda Shaggi’s stray bullet ordeal

According to Shaggi, it all began on March 9, 2026. He described it as “a crazy day” and “a day in my life I wish never happened.”

He said the day had started normally. He had gone out for a brand activation and, after the job was completed, he and his team were on their way out. They were on the expressway when traffic slowed because of a crowd and then they heard the sound of a gunshot. Shaggi said he initially did not understand what was happening. He recalled:

“Everywhere was silent. But I could still see people moving outside, people talking, but I couldn’t hear what they were saying. It was just total silence in the car.”

He touched his hip and there was blood. Only then did he realise that he had been hit by what he described as a stray bullet. The moment brought a frightening question to his mind about if that was going to be his last day. “I didn’t want to die,” he said.

What the public heard in March

The incident did not become public until March 13, when reports emerged that Shaggi had been shot while filming a skit around the Sango-Ota area.

At the time, reports said the shooting happened under the Sango-Ota bridge while he was with his production crew. He was reportedly taken first to Blooming Care Hospital in Alakuko, Lagos, before being referred to Duchess Hospital in Ikeja. The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that officers had been alerted by a hospital about a gunshot victim identified as Shaggi. However, there was uncertainty over the exact location of the incident.

The Ogun State Police Command said it could not confirm that Shaggi had been shot anywhere within Ogun State and urged the public not to spread unverified information while an investigation continued. There were also reports from sources claiming the incident happened in Lagos rather than Ogun State.

At the time, the circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear and Shaggi himself had not publicly explained what happened until seven months later.

In his new account, Shaggi said he became unconscious after the shooting and did not know how he got to the first hospital but he remembered praying.

At the hospital, medical workers cut through his clothes to find the wound and administer first aid. But he was later told that he needed to be moved to another hospital because the first facility did not have enough equipment to handle his condition. He recalled:

“I was sweating. I was holding my leg, I was seeing blood, and all I wanted to hear was a doctor or a nurse telling me, ‘Samuel, you’ll be fine. You’ll be all right. You won’t die,’”

Eventually, he was taken to another hospital, where he was placed in the emergency room and treatment began. For the first time since the shooting, he felt that he might survive, but that feeling didn’t last long because nother fear soon took over. The skit-maker revealed that he could not move his leg.

The Fear Of Losing His Leg

Broda Shaggi

For someone whose career depends heavily on movement, dancing, acting and performance, the injury meant more than physical pain. Shaggi said he began wondering what his future would look like.

He recalled growing up dancing with his father, singing and playing drums. Performing was not simply his job; it was a major part of who he was. Now, he could barely move his injured leg and he became afraid that he might lose it.

“Where do I start from? How do I do it without my leg?” he remembered thinking.

The next day, after waking up, the pain had reduced but remained. Then came the questions. Why had this happened to him? He said he questioned God repeatedly before eventually trying to find meaning in what had happened. Perhaps, he thought, it was a forced period of rest.

Since 2018, Shaggi said, he had hardly stopped working. In his words:

“If I’m not writing, I’m shooting. If I’m not shooting, I’m in the studio making music. If I’m not making music, I’m travelling for something.”

The injury brought all of that to a sudden stop.

Months Of Uncertainty

Three weeks passed, then a month. Shaggi said he underwent his first surgery in Nigeria, with plans for another procedure once his condition improved. But the recovery did not go exactly as expected.

The months that followed were difficult for a performer who was used to being constantly active. He could not act, dance, sing nor do the things he loved. So instead, he returned to writing.

He began working on a YouTube series, hoping that he would eventually be able to return to the audience that had spent months wondering about him. But the emotional struggle was just as difficult as the physical one.

Shaggi said he would sometimes watch videos of his colleagues, laugh at what they were doing and then suddenly begin to cry because he was not sure he would ever be able to do those things again. He also worried that his absence would make people forget him.

“I couldn’t imagine myself not having dropped like six skits in a month,” he said.

For a skitmaker whose career had been built on a relentless stream of content, the uncertainty was difficult to process.

The Decision To Seek Treatment Abroad

By about the fourth month, the situation had become clearer. The expected recovery was not happening as quickly as hoped, and the team decided to seek another option.

“So what they told us was weeks after when it’s better, we just go into the theater again for the second surgery and you know you start your physotherapy. you know they made it look like very from this to this to this and you’ll be fine.

So I think at month four we just said you know what bro, this is your health, we cannot keep trying to package anything. Let’s just try to see how we can make this work.”

“When I left Nigeria I was very very hopeful. I knew that something good would come out of whatever I’m going to do in Dubai.”

Shaggi eventually travelled to Dubai for further treatment. There, he was examined by a surgeon he identified as Dr Anil. Shaggi said doctors in Nigeria had told him that certain markers were not yet regulated enough for the planned surgery to proceed. After examining him, Dr Anil said something similar but decided he could go ahead.

For Shaggi, that decision brought a new sense of hope. He said the doctor told him that after his hip replacement surgery, he should be able to stand on his feet the following day. As with the earlier procedure, he prayed and placed his faith in God. The results gave him reason to believe that he was finally moving forward.

From Hospital Bed To Walking Again

The progress after the Dubai surgery surprised even those around him. According to the doctor featured in Shaggi’s video, he was able to stand with support on the second day after surgery. By the third day, he was walking with crutches.

Around the tenth day, he was able to carry out more exercises, while about three weeks after the surgery, his strength had improved significantly.

For Shaggi, the progress was a major turning point. He was not fully recovered, but he was no longer where he had been months earlier, when he was unable to place his injured leg on the floor or move without two crutches.

By October, he said he could stand without crutches and walk, although he still needed them for support.

Why He Stayed Away For So Long

The long absence was therefore not simply a social media break, it was a period of physical recovery, uncertainty and emotional struggle.

Shaggi had gone from a performer who was constantly writing, shooting, travelling and releasing content to someone who was unsure whether he would ever perform normally again.

That also explains why his brief return to social media in August did not come with the full story. At the time, he acknowledged that people wanted answers but indicated that he was not yet ready to tell them everything. Months after the incident, he finally was.

The October Return

On October 19, Shaggi gave the public its first major sign that he was ready to speak. In an emotional video shared online, he appeared being taken into a medical facility on a stretcher and said March 9 was “a day in my life I wish had never happened.”

He announced that he would tell his story on October 21. The teaser immediately revived public interest in the incident and his long absence.

Two days later, he kept his promise. His YouTube video provided the details that had been missing since March. And despite everything he went through, Shaggi said he did not want people to feel sorry for him. Instead, he wanted them to be grateful with him. He added that the bullet could have struck somewhere else, saying:

“It was a stray bullet, and it came this way to my hip. What if it had come this way and hit my head or hit any vital organ?”

For him, that possibility puts the entire ordeal in perspective even though he is still recovering and using crutches for support, he is alive, walking and preparing to return to the work that had been taken away from him for months.

A Second Chance For Broda Shaggi

Seven months after a gunshot injury abruptly changed the course of his year, Shaggi is looking ahead. The months away cost him time, work and moments he would otherwise have spent creating content. But they also gave him something he now describes as a second chance.

Broda Shaggi told his fans to expect the projects he had planned before the injury and perhaps even more. He said:

“The things I’ve always wanted to do, the things I plan to do this year that I’ve not been able to do for the past six, seven months.”

Then came his familiar playful warning to his followers:

“As you open your Instagram now, make sure say you no block me because I’m coming in with a lot.”

After seven months away, Broda Shaggi is ready to be seen again.
