Three people have been killed in two separate incidents in Jos South and Bokkos local government areas of Plateau State.
In the first incident, two vigilantes were killed and three others injured when suspected gunmen attacked their duty post in Mangor in Bokkos Local Government Area, while in the second incident, gunmen opened fire on traders returning from the Kara Bukuru Livestock Market, killing one person and injuring seven others in Jos South.
The victim in the second incident was identified as Musa Abubakar.
The first incident, which occurred at about 11 pm on Sunday at Angwan Tsarki, a settlement in Mangor, in Bokkos, according to residents, happened when some gunmen opened fire on members of the local neighbourhood watch.
A resident of the community, Bitrus Simon, told newsmen that two of those on duty were killed while three others were injured. He described it as unfortunate and called for improved security measures to protect residents of the area.
Meanwhile, the Plateau State police confirmed the Bukuru market attack.
In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Alfred Alabo, and made available to newsmen on Monday, it was stated that the incident occurred at about 4:30 pm on Sunday, when a vehicle conveying traders returning from Kara Market, Bukuru, was targeted.
The statement said seven injured victims were taken to the Military Clinic, Rukuba Barracks, Jos, where they were receiving medical attention.
The statement said that the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Ayodeji Faniyan, had directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Department of Investigations to take full charge of the investigation and ensure that the perpetrators were arrested and prosecuted.
It said, “The Command strongly condemns this dastardly act and wishes the injured victims quick recovery,” adding that tactical and anti-robbery teams had been mobilised to beef up security around the area, while intelligence gathering had been intensified to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
The Police Command advised residents to go about their lawful business and report suspicious activities to the security agencies.
Also confirming the incident, the Plateau State chapter of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, said the man killed was a Fulani herdsman.
MACBAN called on security agencies to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, MACBAN described the incident as disturbing, saying the victims were returning from their lawful business activities when they were attacked.
Babayo said, “This unfortunate incident is deeply disturbing and represents yet another attack against innocent herders who were peacefully returning from their lawful business activities.”
He urged the Nigeria Police Force, Operation Safe Haven, the Department of State Services, DSS, and other security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the attack.
The MACBAN chairman recalled that five herders were killed on 20 September 2026 around Kassa in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area while returning from the same Kara Bukuru Livestock Market.
He also recalled that herders were attacked near the Conoil Filling Station in December last year while returning from the same market.
Babayo said the recurrence of such attacks had created fear and insecurity among pastoralists and traders who depend on the market for their livelihoods.
While calling on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to strengthen security along the Kara Bukuru market route and take decisive steps to prevent further attacks, Babayo said that no Nigerian should be attacked or killed because of his or her ethnic background or occupation.
He also appealed to members of the association to remain calm and law-abiding and avoid any form of retaliation.
