Actress named CMIFF ambassador

Veteran actress and filmmaker Joyce Mhango Chavula has been named ambassador for the third edition of the Cape Maclear International Film Festival (CMIFF), scheduled from October 15 to 17 at Cape Maclear in Mangochi.

The annual film festival made its debut in 2024 to bring together filmmakers, actors, producers and film enthusiasts to showcase local and international productions.

The event also serves as a platform for recognising industry players for their work, networking, skills development and promoting Malawi as a film and tourism destination.

In an interview after the announcement, Chavula, who won four awards at last year’s CMIFF Awards, said she was honoured to be entrusted with the new role.

“Being chosen as an ambassador for a festival like CMIFF is an honour and somehow a validation of my contributions to the local film industry,” she said.

Chavula said as the festival’s ambassador, her key role will be to act as a bridge between the festival, filmmakers, audiences and aspiring creators.

“I am here to amplify their existing networks and expand the festival’s reach,” she said.

In a separate interview, CMIFF team lead Edward Longwe said the festival selected Chavula because of the influence she has had and the contributions she makes to the industry.
