Thabo Mbeki Reveals What Some ANC Members Are Allegedly Doing While Pretending To Serve The Nation

Stunning revelations have emerged after former South African President Thabo Mbeki made an explosive statement about the alleged infiltration of the African National Congress (ANC) by individuals linked to the former apartheid establishment. In remarks that have reignited debate about the ANC’s history and internal political battles, Mbeki suggested that some individuals who occupy influential positions within the organisation may not be genuine representatives of the liberation movement but could instead be advancing the interests of forces that sought to undermine it.

The former president delivered his assessment in particularly strong terms, questioning the loyalty of individuals who publicly associate themselves with the ANC, wear its colours and carry prominent titles while allegedly serving a different agenda.

Mbeki argued that the presence of someone within the party’s leadership structures does not automatically mean that the individual is committed to the organisation or its founding principles. He went further by suggesting that certain individuals may have been strategically placed inside the movement by forces from the old apartheid order.

“So this person who’s wearing an ANC T-shirt, who’s carrying a big ANC title is not ANC. It’s a person who was infiltrated by the old order into the ANC and their task is to repeat what their handlers tell them to repeat,” Mbeki said.

The statement is particularly significant given the history of covert operations conducted by the apartheid security establishment against liberation movements. During the struggle, the former regime relied on intelligence networks, informants and recruited agents to gather sensitive information, create divisions and weaken organisations fighting for freedom.

The infiltration of political structures was among the methods used to undermine resistance, with allegations of collaboration and espionage leaving lasting scars on the liberation movement. The terms reactionaries, apartheid spies and policy askaris carry considerable historical weight because they are associated with attempts to compromise political organisations from within.

However, Mbeki’s latest remarks go beyond revisiting the history of apartheid-era intelligence operations. His central argument concerns the possibility that individuals can occupy positions of authority within the ANC while allegedly advancing interests that are contrary to those of the organisation.

This is arguably the most striking aspect of his statement. Rather than focusing on people who openly oppose the ANC, Mbeki is drawing attention to individuals who may present themselves as loyal members while allegedly repeating messages and advancing agendas dictated by external handlers.

His comments are also likely to attract attention because of the ANC’s current political difficulties. The organisation is facing internal disagreements, questions about its ideological direction and growing pressure to rebuild its support after losing its parliamentary majority in the 2024 national elections.

For a movement whose history is deeply rooted in the struggle against apartheid, questions surrounding infiltration and the possible influence of hostile forces remain particularly sensitive. Thousands of activists sacrificed their freedom and lives in the fight for liberation, making allegations of compromised loyalty within the organisation an issue that carries enormous historical and political significance.

Mbeki’s remarks have once again brought the ANC’s complicated history into focus, particularly the question of how deeply apartheid-era infiltration may have affected the movement and its internal politics. His warning is a reminder that the struggle for political influence does not always come from outside an organisation, as individuals can occupy positions of authority while allegedly advancing interests that undermine the very movement they claim to represent.

Coming from a former president who played a central role in the ANC’s political history, the statement is particularly striking. It has added fresh weight to the debate about the movement’s internal struggles and raised renewed scrutiny of those who speak in its name while allegedly taking instructions from elsewhere.
