MPs Ng'ang'a, Koimburi blame county for Thika Hospital infant deaths

Kiambu County Government has come under fire from two Members of Parliament following the deaths of four infants delivered at Thika Level Five Hospital as part of a rare set of quintuplets born on September 13, 2026.

Thika Town MP Alice Ng'ang'a and Juja MP George Koimburi, speaking in Juja, claimed the babies could have survived had the hospital had specialised equipment and enough medical personnel on hand.

"Governor alisema Thika level five ni mzuri. Ingekuwa iko na madawa na madaktari, angepelekwa KU?" Ng'ang'a posed, questioning why the infants would have needed transfer to Kenyatta National Hospital if Thika Level Five was as well-equipped as the county government claims.

Ng'ang'a accused the governor of playing politics with the health of Kiambu residents, and stressed the importance of prioritising maternal and child healthcare in the county.

Koimburi backed her remarks, saying Kiambu County has a broader crisis in healthcare infrastructure and medical supplies. He cited a dispensary in Gachororo, Juja, that lacks the equipment needed to serve residents.

The remarks come days after a 28-year-old Juja woman, identified as Mercy, gave birth to quintuplets through a rare natural delivery at Thika Level Five Hospital on September 13.

Four of the five infants died on Tuesday morning, September 15, after being airlifted by ambulance to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital.
