Sajith Calls for Immediate Provincial Council Elections, Opposes Committee Extension

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said in Parliament today that he had requested that the term of the committee appointed on Provincial Councils and the electoral system not be extended, claiming that the committee had been established to prevent the Provincial Council elections from being held.

He said extending the term of the committee would deprive the people of their opportunity to have Provincial Council elections.

The Opposition Leader said that what should happen at this stage is not an extension of the committee’s term, but the holding of Provincial Council elections as soon as possible. He also called on the government to hold the Provincial Council elections if it was not afraid of the people, and urged that the elections be held under the previous electoral system if necessary.

Premadasa further said that extending the term of the committee to delay the Provincial Council elections would amount to depriving the people of their fundamental rights and violating the sovereignty of the people. He therefore called for an immediate end to what he described as an anti-democratic act, stating that the Opposition was opposed to it.
