Sinner Withdraws From Shanghai Masters Due To Knee Injury
Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Rolex Shanghai Masters, with the world No. 1 still unable to return to competitive tennis because of a right knee problem.
The Italian has not played a match since July, when he defeated Alexander Zverev in four sets to win the Wimbledon final. His ongoing knee issue then ruled him out of the North American hard-court swing, including the US Open, and also prevented him from defending his China Open title in Beijing.
Sinner announced his latest withdrawal on social media and told fans in China he was disappointed.
He said he had hoped to compete in Shanghai, enjoys playing in front of the city’s fans, and was sorry he would not be able to appear next week. He thanked supporters and said he hoped to return next year.
With the withdrawal, Sinner will miss the entire lucrative Asian swing. Medical staff are taking a cautious approach and want his knee to heal fully before he makes his competitive comeback. A possible return could come during the autumn indoor season.
