Akande Backs Adebayo, Urges Nigerians To Break With Past In 2027

Former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Mulikat Adeola Akande, has urged Nigerians to support the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, in the 2027 election, describing his emergence as an opportunity for the country to pursue a new direction.

Akande spoke at the public presentation of Adebayo’s book, Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity: Governance and Accelerated Development — Blueprint of a New Nigeria, 2027–2031, where she expressed confidence in the SDP candidate’s ability to address Nigeria’s development challenges.

The former federal lawmaker said Nigerians should not reject Adebayo on the grounds that the SDP is a relatively small political party, arguing that the quality and vision of a candidate should matter more than the size of the political platform.

“Each time I hear the presidential candidate speak in public, I just pity Nigerians because it is so easy to see someone who can take you to the promised land,” Akande said.

She urged Nigerians to pay attention to Adebayo’s policies and agenda rather than the political strength of the SDP, stressing that the candidate had made himself available to serve the country.

“People believe, ‘Oh, SDP is a small party. We don’t know. They only want to align with the big parties,’” she said.

Akande maintained that Adebayo had gone beyond making campaign promises by presenting specific policies and outlining what he intends to achieve if elected president.

“He has offered himself. He has offered everything that he has to ensure that this country changes,” she said.

She challenged Nigerians to critically examine the country’s current situation and question whether they were satisfied with the direction of the country under the political leadership they had continued to support.

“Do we like what is going wrong right now? And you know the people who are causing this, and you are still standing by them. What else do you want?” she asked.

The former lawmaker also cautioned Nigerians against allowing political party structures to determine their choice of president, insisting that the 2027 election would have consequences for generations to come.

“The earlier we begin to think in the right direction, the better,” she said.

Akande called on SDP supporters to intensify grassroots mobilisation and take the party’s message to Nigerians across the country ahead of the 2027 election.

“Just like the Prophet Elbuba said, everybody go out there and get people to believe in what we are doing in the SDP,” she said.

She stressed that the campaign should not be viewed as a personal ambition by Adebayo or individual supporters, but as a broader effort to address Nigeria’s challenges.

“It is not about me. It is not about him. It is about the country,” Akande declared.

She warned that Nigerians could regret failing to take advantage of what she described as an opportunity for political change in 2027.

“The earlier we catch on to this opportunity, the better for us,” Akande said, urging voters to carefully consider the consequences of their choice when they go to the polls.
