Purpose Before Legacy

Looking ahead to March next year, I reflect on a milestone I once found hard to imagine.

It will mark five years since my successful stem cell transplant following a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia.

The experience changed my perspective. It stripped away many of the assumptions I had about success, achievement and what truly matters.

Facing uncertain times shifts your perspective, making you focus less on future milestones and more on how you use your time.

I’ve realised that meaningful lives are not defined by the legacy they leave behind, but by the daily sense of purpose that shapes them, and purpose, at its heart, is about people.

It is found in the difference we make in the lives of others, the opportunities we create and the support we provide.

While legacy encourages us to look ahead and ask how we will be remembered, purpose draws our attention to the people around us today. It shifts the focus from ourselves to a greater cause.

The concept of purpose is intertwined with equity. When our actions generate opportunities for others, eliminate obstacles or empower individuals to realise their potential, we contribute to a more equitable society.

Whether as individuals, leaders or organisations, purpose gains significance when it extends beyond personal success and helps others thrive. Thus, purpose and legacy are connected yet distinct concepts.

Legacy is the impact we leave behind after we are gone. It shows our desire to make a meaningful contribution and improve our communities, organisations and families. Purpose is where this journey starts. Purpose gives meaning to our work and direction to our actions. It explains why we do what we do.

It helps us make decisions, shapes our priorities and influences how we use our time and energy.

LEGACY VS PURPOSE

There is an important difference between pursuing legacy and pursuing purpose. Legacy focuses on how we want to be remembered, leading to concerns about achievements, recognition and the impression we hope to make.

Purpose shifts our focus to the present and asks how we can contribute today. While one is focused on future remembrance, the other is concerned with present action, encouraging us to focus less on ourselves and more on the value we create for others.

Ironically, the people who leave the biggest legacies are often those who spend the least time thinking about legacy itself. Think of the teacher who inspires confidence in a struggling pupil, the entrepreneur who creates opportunities for others, the mentor who shares knowledge generously or the volunteer who quietly serves their community year after year.

Most focused on making a difference, and their legacy became the natural outcome of a life lived with purpose.

The same principle applies to organisations. Every organisation wants to build a lasting legacy. It wants to be respected, trusted and remembered for its contribution. It wants to create value for shareholders, customers and communities.

These ambitions are reasonable and necessary. However, lasting organisational legacies are not created through success alone. They are built on purpose.

I think Capricorn Group provides a good example. For 44 years, Capricorn has grown from humble beginnings into a diversified financial services group.

Throughout a journey of evolving markets, changing industries and environments, the lesson is that lasting success requires more than good financial results. It requires purpose.

CONNECTORS OF POSITIVE CHANGE

Capricorn Group’s purpose is to be connectors of positive change. That purpose serves as a practical compass for decision-making and is reflected in how the group connects customers to products and services, creates growth opportunities, contributes to communities and collaborates with partners to create sustainable opportunities.

It places people at the centre of progress.

Real progress requires collaboration because purpose becomes credible through action. At Capricorn, this is reflected in customer relationships, partnerships built around shared goals, employee volunteerism through ChangeMaker initiatives and the work of the Capricorn Foundation.

In doing so, the group creates opportunities for more people to participate, progress and succeed, demonstrating that purpose is not simply something an organisation communicates, but something people experience.

In essence, the equation is Purpose + Equity = Legacy.

Purpose shapes what we do today. Equity ensures the benefits of those actions create opportunities for others and extend beyond ourselves. The legacy is the result of those choices. The three are inseparable. Without purpose, legacy lacks direction.

Without equity, purpose risks becoming self-serving. Together, they create the foundation for meaningful and lasting impact.

An organisation’s legacy is shaped not by one project or achievement, but by the cumulative impact of decisions, relationships and interactions that reflect its purpose over time.

The same is true for individuals. Most of us may never have a building or street named after us or be recorded in history books, but we can influence others through our actions, values and contributions.

Every action matters. Whether it’s encouraging a colleague, creating opportunities for a young professional, supporting someone in need, or leading with integrity, these seemingly small gestures can create a ripple effect far greater than we realise.

That is why I believe purpose deserves our attention more than legacy. Legacy is important. It reminds us to think beyond ourselves. But it should be the outcome, not the objective. Purpose should come first because purpose keeps us grounded in what matters today.

It reminds us to focus on the people we serve, the lives we touch and the positive change we can create with the resources, influence and opportunities available to us right now.

The experience that changed my own perspective taught me that time is precious, but purpose gives time meaning. The most important question should not be what legacy we hope to leave behind, but whether the purpose that guides our lives today is creating opportunities for others and contributing to a more equitable future.

Legacy is not what we intend; it is what others experience because we were here.

Five years ago, I was given the opportunity to continue my journey.

That experience taught me many things, but most importantly, we cannot always control how long we have, but we can choose how we use the time we are given.

And perhaps that is where purpose begins – not in the legacy we hope to leave behind one day, but in the difference we choose to make today.
