Tanzania moves to integrate primary healthcare’s digital systems to boost its services delivery

ARUSHA: TANZANIA is moving to integrate digital systems used in primary healthcare to improve access to timely information and strengthen the delivery of services to citizens, including digital payments to community health workers.

Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Prime Minister’s Office –Regional Administration and Local Government (PMO-RALG), Erick Kitali, said the success of the country’s digital transformation depends on collaboration among institutions, visionary leadership and involving the right experts in decision-making.

Speaking in Arusha today, September 10, 2026, during a discussion on strengthening primary healthcare through public digital infrastructure and Tanzania’s journey towards digitally paying community health workers, the director stated that it is vital for government institutions to ensure their systems are interconnected to facilitate timely access to information and make service delivery more efficient.

“We need to talk about collaboration and systems integration. Ensure the right people are at the decision-making table,” he said.

Additionally, he said that Tanzania is also relying on local experts to design, develop and manage digital systems used in healthcare, including systems for registration, payments and information management.

“The government has prepared a blueprint for the use of technology in community health worker services, including plans to establish a joint dashboard that would integrate information from different systems,” he said.

According to him, the dashboard would enable authorities to track services and payments from the community level to the national level, while quickly identifying challenges such as delays in payments.

Moreover, he also stressed the importance of research and implementation monitoring to identify challenges early and enable timely interventions.
