Wamalwa Wants Sifuna, Orengo in Talks to Unite Opposition Against Ruto
AI summary
Kenya’s opposition leaders are preparing to select a joint presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa announced the move, framing the opposition as an alternative government that aims to unite diverse political formations and prevent vote-splitting.
Speaking at the Priesthood Fellowship Church in Kahawa West, Nairobi, the former Defence Cabinet Secretary confirmed that opposition figures plan to engage leaders from the Linda Mwananchi movement to consolidate their strategy.
“This week and next month, we are asking those others in Linda Mwananchi, including Sifuna and Orengo, to come together with us so that we get one candidate,” Wamalwa said.
Wamalwa voiced confidence in the coalition’s ability to drive political transformation, encouraging citizens to support the process and pray for unity among opposition groups.
“But hope is the way. In the next 10 months, we will bring changes,” he said.
With fewer than 300 days remaining before the next general election, Wamalwa called on religious leaders and the public to promote a peaceful campaign environment. He cautioned political parties against fueling divisions or inciteful behavior as they position themselves for the ballot, stressing that a credible, violence-free election remains vital for national cohesion and democratic stability.
Transparency Demands for Voter Register
Turning to election preparedness, Wamalwa addressed the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) directly regarding voter registration records. He urged the commission to release the active voters’ register to all political parties prior to the upcoming final mass registration exercise.
“Next month, IEBC, we are going for the final mass voter registration. We want the register by now; already registered members be availed to all of us,” he said.
Wamalwa said opposition parties seek immediate access to scrutinize the records for potential irregularities, including concerns regarding the illegal registration of foreign nationals.
Beyond electoral reforms, the DAP-K leader highlighted widespread public dissatisfaction over the rising cost of living. He pointed directly to steep increases in fuel prices and essential household goods, such as milk, as primary economic burdens facing Kenyans.
Wamalwa indicated that economic relief and kitchen-table issues will form the cornerstone of the opposition’s platform as leaders build momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
