South Africa’s largest retail bank, Capitec, which has more than 26 million active clients, will add a secondary listing on A2X Markets next week.
Currently worth R532 billion on the JSE, the secondary listing gives investors another regulated venue on which to trade Capitec shares, with the company saying this should broaden investor access and support liquidity.
Capitec CFO Grant Hardy said it “supports our commitment to creating value for shareholders by providing access to an additional trading venue and enhanced liquidity”.
A2X, which launched in 2017, is a licensed stock exchange providing companies with a secondary listing venue and investors with an additional platform on which to trade shares. There are over 160 securities and instruments listed on the exchange.
Capitec will retain its primary listing on the JSE, while its issued share capital will remain unchanged. The bank joins a number of other South African banking groups with secondary listings on A2X such as Absa, Investec, Nedbank, and Standard Bank.
The listing comes after another year of strong growth for Capitec, which reported a 23% increase in headline earnings to R16.8 billion for the year ended February 2026, while return on equity increased to 31%.
Capitec had assets of R263.3 billion at year-end and employed 17,672 people across 885 branches. Its active client base was 25.8 million at the end of February and has since grown to more than 26 million.
Banking app clients reached 15.3 million, a gain of 19%.
At the time it published its annual results, it said it was focused on building resilience in a turbulent time. “We provision prudently so we are never caught short when our clients come under pressure. A simple, focused business model keeps us away from the complexity that exposes others,” it said.
A2X CEO Kevin Brady said the exchange was “pleased to welcome Capitec to A2X. Capitec has established itself as one of South Africa's leading banking groups and its listing further strengthens the diversity and depth of the A2X market.”
