Nursing mother, 27, shot dead in Bawku West

A 27-year-old nursing mother of a three-month-old baby, identified as Koyraga Nbeduma, has been shot dead by two unidentified gunmen along the Tilli–Widnaba road in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2026, when Ms Nbeduma and another woman, Barikisu Ali, were returning to Widnaba after going to mill corn at Azupupunga, a community in the Tilli Electoral Area.

The two women were reportedly attacked by the gunmen while on their way home.

Attack

Daily Graphic reported that Ms Ali managed to escape from the attackers and run to safety, leaving her bicycle behind.

The three-month-old baby of the deceased was reportedly found by the roadside following the incident, while Ms Nbeduma’s body was later discovered about 200 metres from the road in a nearby maize farm.

The incident was subsequently reported to the Zebilla Police, who conveyed the body of the deceased to the hospital.

A nurse on duty, Inusah Lukman, confirmed her death, after which the body was released to the family for burial.

Family devastated

A family member of the deceased, Ali Sulemana, described the incident as shocking and devastating, saying the family never expected that the woman would leave home and not return.

The Zebilla Police Commander, DSP Jackson Kpirtufe, confirmed the incident and said the motive behind the attack had not yet been established.

He said the police had commenced investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the death and identify the persons responsible for the attack.
