Michael Carrick has the full support of the Manchester United dressing room, according to his first-choice goalkeeper, Senne Lammens.
Manchester United are gearing up to host Bournemouth in the Premier League fresh off a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como in Europe. It has been a dire start to the season for Michael Carrick, with big questions now being asked about whether he has a long future at Old Trafford.
With questions being asked and potential candidates expressing an interest in the biggest job in football, all eyes will be on United when they take on Bournemouth this weekend. The Cherries go into the game after a historic 3-0 win over AC Milan on Thursday night.
There are examples of unrest in the dressing room, with multiple players speaking out in recent weeks. Lisandro Martinez is unhappy with the board, and Bruno Fernandes questioned the tactics midweek.
Senne Lammens backs Michael Carrick
When Carrick held his press conference on Friday, the United head coach delivered an astonishing six-minute monologue with messages for the dressing room. He demanded humility from his players as they tried to overcome a torrid slump.
This has raised questions over whether the United dressing room is united. From the outside, it doesn’t look like it.
In an interview with Sky Sports ahead of United vs Bournemouth, Lammens explained that the team are trying to set the record straight. He also stressed that the dressing room is united behind the manager.
“For me personally, I think it is,” Lammens said.
“I think it’s easy to see maybe after a game when players are very frustrated, and I get it, I’m very frustrated as well because we all really want to do better and we all want to win and then we might say sometimes things we don’t really mean or fully explain what we mean.
“Of course, the people at home can’t see that, so we need to also try to look like that when we are on the pitch in the weekend, but I can assure you that we’re doing everything we can and we’re all together behind the coach, the staff, players, front office.
“Everyone knows, of course, they have to do better, but I think we are united and we are trying to get better as a team and together.”
Lammens may be one of the younger players in the squad, but he speaks well, almost like an experienced professional. He will be learning lots from this difficult period.
One thing Man Utd need to work on
Lammens can see the entire game unfold in front of him each week. In his opinion, United are guilty of starting games too slowly. Not hitting their opponents early on by getting on the front foot.
This was evident again in United’s defeat to Como midweek, and now Bournemouth will fancy their chances of turning us over as the Italians did.
He added: “So, that’s probably one of, if not not the biggest thing we need to work on right now is to keep ourselves in the game and to try and yeah, get that first goal ourselves instead of being one nil down straight away.
“So, yeah, I get people thinking like it’s an easy fix or like why don’t you just try harder or something like that? And trust me, we are trying harder every day and trying to come up with a solution. But sometimes when it’s not going your way, it’s just yeah, everything seems sort of like falls into place for the other team.
