Three more arrested as investigation into alleged 2026 school placement fraud expands

Three people have been arrested in Kumasi and Accra as investigations into alleged fraud linked to the 2026 Senior High School (SHS) placement process intensify.

The latest development follows the arrest of Yaw Adjei Boateng, a Physician Assistant at the SDA Hospital in Kumasi, on Thursday, September 24.

He was reportedly interrogated by officers of the Intelligence Unit following his arrest.

During questioning, Yaw Adjei Boateng admitted knowing Vicentia Antwi Appiah and said the two had spoken several times by phone but had never met in person.

According to a statement on the investigation, Vicentia contacted him to help secure a school placement for Benedicta Yaa Edinam at Mafe Methodist Girls’ SHS.

He told investigators that he received GH¢8,500 from Vicentia and subsequently sent the money to a former schoolmate, Brian Opare Addo, who works at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, to facilitate the placement.

However, the placement was unsuccessful.

Yaw Adjei Boateng reportedly instructed Brian Opare Addo to return the money to Vicentia, and told investigators that the refund was subsequently made.

He also disclosed that, in the previous year, he had successfully secured a school placement for another person at St Monica’s SHS through Brian Opare Addo.

Brian Opare Addo has since been invited to report to the Intelligence Unit on Monday, September 28, to assist with the investigation.

Meanwhile, two additional people were arrested on Friday, September 25, at the Accra Resolution Centre in connection with the alleged school placement fraud.

The arrests in Accra come a day after the Kumasi arrest, bringing the number of people arrested in the latest phase of the investigation to three.

Investigators are expected to establish the extent of the suspects’ involvement and determine whether other individuals were involved in attempts to secure school placements through unofficial channels.

The investigation remains ongoing.
