Renshaw’s 190 rescues Australia against South Africa in Durban

DURBAN – Matt Renshaw produced a remarkable display of patience and resilience, scoring a career-best 190 to steer Australia to 390 all out against South Africa on the second day of the opening Test, transforming a difficult position into a competitive first-innings total. Resuming unbeaten on 46 with Australia struggling at 187-6, the left-handed batter anchored the innings with a determined knock built on concentration and disciplined shot selection. He reached his century off 204 balls, striking only 10 boundaries at that stage, underlining the composure behind his innings.

Renshaw found an invaluable partner in Nathan Lyon, with the pair adding 134 runs for the ninth wicket in a remarkable stand that frustrated South Africa’s bowlers and revived Australia’s hopes. The partnership was reported as the highest ninth-wicket stand against the Proteas.Lyon contributed 27 before Marco Jansen trapped him leg before wicket, but Renshaw continued alongside the tail as Australia extended its recovery from 124-6 on the opening day.

An extended tea interval briefly interrupted the momentum, yet Renshaw and Josh Hazlewood survived for another half-hour before the batter’s outstanding innings ended at 190. He edged Simon Harmer to slip, falling just 10 runs short of a double century. The innings marked his first Test hundred since 2017 and his highest score in the format. Renshaw’s performance also strengthened the case for Australia’s decision to deploy him in the middle order against South Africa’s spin attack. Wiaan Mulder led the home side’s bowling effort with four wickets for 68 runs.

Australia then made an early breakthrough with the ball. Ryan Rickelton edged a loose drive off Hazlewood to Beau Webster in the slips, leaving South Africa at 27-1 before bad light halted play for the second successive day.

SOUTH AFRICA 27-1 (Markram 15*, Bedingham 12*, Hazlewood 1-9) trail AUSTRALIA 390 (Renshaw 190, Cummins 43, Mulder 4-68, Jansen 3-68) by 363 runs.
