Manchester United fans’ man of the match poll against Tottenham show position switch was bittersweet

Manchester United supporters were asked to make a tough selection after the draw against Tottenham. Find a man of the match.
There was huge disappointment after Manchester United’s draw with Tottenham. Once again, the Red Devils chucked away a lead, and once again, the team failed to beat a side with 10 men.
We almost didn’t post our ‘man of the match poll’, but it was a draw and not a defeat, so we stuck to our guns and put the poll out on Talking Points. Of course, the first comment from a supporter read, ‘Man of the match – are you kidding?!’.
Lessons learned from Man Utd man of the match poll v Spurs
Despite this, plenty of fans expressed their views on the poll and cast their vote. And there was an interesting winner.
-
Leny Yoro:
33 per cent
-
Carlos Baleba:
23 per cent
-
Bryan Mbeumo:
11 per cent
-
Kobbie Mainoo:
11 per cent
Leny Yoro picked up the most votes, even though he was substituted early in the 59th minute for Diogo Dalot.
United supporters were full of admiration for how centre-back Yoro adapted to the challenge of playing at right-back. His tackling and tenacity helped to keep United in the game in the first half.
Yoro made three tackles and five interceptions, and looked like a natural playing in the role.

Manchester United fans expressed concerns over head coach Michael Carrick following the draw, his decision to substitute Leny Yoro drew some criticism too.
While it was a positive tactical decision to play Yoro there, Carrick undid it by taking the Frenchman off so early, leaving a bittersweet taste.

The other key takeaway from the poll was the appreciation United fans had for debutant Carlos Baleba, who replaced Youri Tielemans in the second half.
Baleba made an instant impression with his first touches of the ball, and there is real hope at United that the Cameroon ace can help to turn our fortunes around.
Looking back at United fans pre-match predictions
It’s also worth looking back at our pre-match poll, where only 66.6 per cent of United fans had backed a home victory.
20.4 per cent of supporters accurately called a draw, while 13 per cent of fans had tipped a home defeat.
United’s performance underlined the negativity, and we don’t expect a high percentage of fans to be backing an away win over Atletico Madrid.
