Nigerian newspapers review: [2027] Parties, candidates kick over omission in INEC’s final list

In today’s Nigerian newspapers review programme, Today in the News, Vanguard leads with political parties and candidates whose names were omitted from the final lists of governorship and state houses of assembly contestants released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), kicking against their exclusion.

Another **headline **says that despite more than 200 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of proven natural gas reserves and nearly two decades of policies aimed at making gas the foundation of Nigeria’s industrial economy, the country still exports more gas than it sells domestically.

Vanguard also reports that UK universities are withdrawing admission offers to international applicants, including Nigerians and Pakistanis, amid fears that rising student visa refusals could lead to a ban on recruiting overseas students.

Moving to another newspaper, The Guardian reports that ahead of the crucial negotiation for the country’s minimum wage review, the rising number of working poor, the spike in the percentage of workers outside formal employment and the sheer size of individuals earning N70,000 and above have raised questions about the relevance of national wage setting, an exercise designed to protect workers against abusive remuneration.

The Punch reports that the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has rearrested an 83-year-old woman, Uloma Uchechi Sunday, for alleged drug trafficking, barely a year after she was convicted of the same offence.

Lastly, The Nation leads with President Bola Tinubu saying that as part of efforts to reduce the cost of living, his administration has waived N3.3 trillion in fuel taxes and duties.
