ZASS invites Zanzibaris to join astronomy creativity and innovation challenge
ZANZIBAR: THE government of Zanzibar is inviting young people aged seven to 24 to showcase their creativity and innovation in astronomy through a challenge offering cash prizes and an opportunity to present their work at the launch of the Zanzibar Observatory and Planetarium project.
Organised by the Zanzibar Astronomy and Space Society (ZASS), the Astronomy Creativity and Innovation Challenge is open to Zanzibar residents, with submissions accepted from October 12 to 18, 2026.
The initiative seeks to encourage young people to explore astronomy, science and technology through practical projects, creative ideas and digital content.
According to organisers, participants can compete in three age categories: juniors aged seven to 13, seniors aged 14 to 18, and advanced participants aged 19 to 24. Both individual and group entries are welcome.
“The challenge features several categories, including visual and digital content creation, solar system and galaxy models, rocket and spacecraft models, do-it-yourself educational telescopes, and other innovative ideas in science and technology,” the organisers stated.
Under the visual and digital content category, participants will be required to produce videos or graphics of no more than three minutes.
Winners will receive cash prizes and an opportunity to showcase their talents before distinguished guests at the grand launch of the Zanzibar Observatory and Planetarium project, scheduled for the end of October this year.
Additionally, they said for digital entries, participants will be required to post their work on Instagram, tag @zass.tz and use the hashtag #ZASSChallenge2026. Their accounts must be public to allow the organisers to view the submissions.
Physical models must be delivered to the Zanzibar Astronomy and Space Society headquarters in Kibele, Zanzibar.
The challenge comes as an opportunity for young people to turn their interest in space and astronomy into practical innovations while developing scientific and creative skills.
