The Jigawa State Government has appointed Lawan Muhammad Sani as the 17th Emir of Gumel following the death of his father, the late Emir, HRH Ahmed Sani II.
The appointment was approved by Governor Umar Namadi following recommendations from the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
The new Emir succeeds his father, who died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, after a 46-year reign.
Until his appointment, Sani was the Chiroman Gumel and served as Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA.
In a statement signed by the Secretary to the Jigawa State Government, Bala Ibrahim, Governor Namadi congratulated the new Emir and wished him “many years of successful service to the Gumel Emirate and the nation.”
The governor also commended the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers, led by the Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Nasoro, for their role in the selection process.
He further expressed appreciation to the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse, who form the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, for their “invaluable advice” during the process.
The state government also renewed its condolences to the royal family, the people of Gumel Emirate and the entire people of Jigawa State over the death of the former Emir.
The government prayed for Allah to forgive the late Emir’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him Al-Jannatul Firdaus.
