A holiday should leave you with wonderful memories, not a mountain of expenses waiting for you when you get home. But even the most carefully planned getaway can end up costing more than expected if you overlook a few important details.

Before you book your next trip, take a look at these common holiday budget mistakes and find out how to avoid them.

1. Only budgeting for flights and accommodation

Securing affordable flights and accommodation feels like a win, but these are only two pieces of the holiday puzzle. Airport transfers, car hire, parking, baggage fees, travel insurance and daily transport can all add significantly to the final bill. Factor these expenses into your budget from the beginning rather than treating them as afterthoughts.

2. Underestimating daily spending

It’s easy to focus on the big expenses while forgetting how quickly smaller purchases add up. Morning coffees, snacks, cocktails, spontaneous shopping trips and entrance fees can take a surprising bite out of your holiday budget.

Set a realistic daily spending allowance that covers meals, activities and little extras, and keep track of what you’re spending along the way.

3. Leaving bookings until the last minute

Waiting until you’re at your destination to book popular attractions, tours or activities could mean paying more or missing out altogether. Research your options beforehand and compare online prices.

Booking selected experiences in advance can help you avoid inflated last-minute costs and keep your itinerary within budget.

4. Ignoring foreign exchange fees

For international holidays, exchange rates and transaction fees can quietly increase your spending. Using your bank card abroad may attract additional charges, while exchanging money at airports can come with less favourable rates.

Check your bank’s international transaction fees before leaving, compare currency exchange options and avoid unnecessary cash withdrawals.

5. Not accounting for holiday meals

Eating out for every meal can become one of your biggest holiday expenses. While sampling local restaurants is part of the fun, consider booking accommodation with breakfast included or choosing a self-catering option.

Visit local markets, pick up snacks and plan a few easy meals rather than relying on restaurants every day.

6. Forgetting to budget for emergencies

Travel insurance can offer valuable protection against unexpected events, from medical emergencies and lost luggage to trip cancellations. However, not every additional expense will be covered by your policy.

You may still need money for unexpected transport costs, meals during delays, medical excesses or other last-minute expenses. Set aside a small emergency fund, separate from your everyday holiday budget, and make sure you understand exactly what your travel insurance covers before you leave.

7. Spending more because you’re on holiday

The holiday mindset can make it tempting to justify every purchase with the familiar* ‘I deserve it’* mentality. While treating yourself is part of enjoying a getaway, impulse purchases and unplanned splurges can quickly derail your budget.

Decide beforehand what you’re happy to spend on special experiences, souvenirs and treats, and give yourself room to enjoy them without overspending.

8. Forgetting the costs of getting home

The holiday budget shouldn’t end when you check out of your hotel. Airport transfers, meals during the journey, extra baggage and even restocking your fridge when you return can all add to your expenses. Keep a portion of your budget aside for the journey home and your first few days back.

A memorable holiday doesn’t have to come with an expensive price tag. By planning for the smaller expenses, leaving room for unexpected costs and keeping track of your spending, you can enjoy your time away without returning home to a financial headache.
