Ten years ago, when I left Nigeria for America, I carried with me a dream I could not yet name. Like many immigrants, I arrived with hope, determination and a desire to build something meaningful. I did not know then what that dream would become or how far it would eventually travel.
That dream became Paw Salvation. What began as a simple act of feeding homeless pets and supporting their families gradually grew into a movement that would earn recognition in Chicago. Paw Salvation was honoured by ABC7 with its “Making Chicago Proud” recognition and later received NewsNation’s “American Hero” designation.
These honours were deeply meaningful, but they were never the ultimate destination. Looking back, I now understand that every recognition, every headline and every milestone was preparing me for a larger assignment. That assignment was to give back to the continent that raised me.
Even while building a life and a movement in America, my heart remained connected to Africa. I carried with me the conviction that service should not be limited by geography and that success becomes more meaningful when it creates opportunities for others. I wanted to take the lessons, values and spirit of service that had shaped my journey and use them to help inspire a new generation of African leaders.
Today, that dream has come full circle. As we celebrate the graduates of this 12-week empowerment programme, I am filled with gratitude and hope. These young women showed up, remained committed, learned new skills and grew into stronger and more confident versions of themselves.
They have demonstrated that when young women are given the right opportunities, encouragement and platforms, they can become powerful agents of change in their communities.
At the same time, we are taking another significant step by establishing Paw Salvation and African Girl Guide in Ghana and Nigeria. This expansion represents much more than the opening of new initiatives. It represents the return of a dream to the soil from which its journey began.
This is why today is more than an awards ceremony.
It is a reminder that an immigrant’s dream, once planted in American soil, can grow into
something strong enough to cross an ocean and reach back home. It is evidence that the experiences we gain abroad can be transformed into opportunities that empower people and communities on the African continent.
For me, the journey from Lagos to Chicago and now to Accra and Nigeria is deeply personal. It is a journey of service, purpose and responsibility. It reminds me that our stories are not only about where we go, but also about what we bring back and whom we lift as we rise.
To our distinguished guests, partners, speakers and everyone who has supported African Girl Guide, thank you. Your presence and belief in this mission are invaluable. Building sustainable opportunities for young African women requires collective effort, and every contribution brings us closer to the Africa we envision.

As part of today’s celebration, African Girl Guide also honoured two distinguished leaders whose work continues to shape the safety, security and empowerment of women and girls across Nigeria. The Distinguished Leadership & National Security Advocacy Award was presented to Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, MON, Director General of the Department of State Services, in recognition of his outstanding commitment to leadership, national security awareness, responsible citizenship, and his invaluable contribution to equipping young women with the knowledge and values needed to contribute meaningfully to society through the African Girl Guide. The Distinguished Women’s Protection & Advocacy Award was presented to Binta Lami Adamu Bello, OON, Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, in recognition of her outstanding commitment to the protection, empowerment, and advocacy of women and girls, and her invaluable contribution to raising awareness and equipping young women to make informed and
empowered choices through the African Girl Guide — amongst other partners that were recognized and awarded at the ceremony.
To every young woman receiving a certificate today, and to every honouree whose outstanding commitment is being recognised, I want you to know this: you are the reason this journey matters.
You showed up. You stayed. You learned. You grew.
Today, you graduate not merely as participants in a 12-week programme, but as young women equipped to become leaders, changemakers and contributors to a movement that is only beginning.
The world needs your voice. Your community needs your leadership. Africa needs the gifts, ideas, courage and determination that you carry within you.
So, go and lead. Go and learn. Go and thrive.
Do not be afraid to dream beyond your immediate circumstances. Do not allow your present location to limit your vision of what is possible.
Your journey may take you across borders, just as mine did. But wherever your journey leads you, remember where you came from and find ways to lift others along the way.
You were born for this. Congratulations, Class of 2026. This is only the beginning.
