Mnangagwa Warns Zimbabwean Diplomats Against Treating Foreign Postings Like Holidays

Mnangagwa Sends Strong Warning To Zimbabwean Diplomats: “I Demand Results”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has challenged Zimbabwean diplomats to deliver tangible results, warning that foreign postings must not become holiday opportunities. He wants embassies to attract investment, promote trade and create opportunities that benefit ordinary Zimbabweans.

The President delivered the message on Monday, 2 November 2026, during a meet-and-greet reception for members of Zimbabwe’s foreign service at the Harare International Conference Centre.

He made it clear that ambassadors and other diplomatic officials would be expected to demonstrate commitment and accountability while representing the country abroad.

Mnangagwa also used the occasion to outline his expectations for Zimbabwe’s diplomatic missions, particularly their contribution to the country’s economic development.

Mnangagwa Says Diplomatic Jobs Are Not Holidays

Mnangagwa used unusually direct language when explaining what he expected from officials serving outside Zimbabwe.

“I demand results,” he told the gathering, warning that diplomatic appointments came with serious responsibilities.

He added:

“Under my Administration, serving as diplomats is not ‘child’s play’. Ndinoda madzimai nevarume vakatsunga, vakazvipira kushanda nesimba kuti nyika ibudirire (I want determined women and men who are committed to working hard for the country’s success).”

The President also had a message for those who might regard overseas postings as an opportunity to enjoy themselves.

“Avo vanofunga kuti vari kuenda kuholiday, bodo. Hamusi kuenda kunze ikoko kunomwa mazambiringa (Those who think they are going on holiday, no. You are not going abroad to drink wine).”

He said diplomatic missions should help Zimbabwe secure technology transfers, scientific cooperation, investment and specialist skills.

Mnangagwa Outlines Zimbabwe’s Diplomatic Priorities

The President also urged diplomats to protect Zimbabwe’s national interests while maintaining relationships with other countries.

He reiterated the country’s foreign policy position that Zimbabwe is a friend to all and an enemy to none.

He said the country could not afford to depend on one nation or political bloc.

Mnangagwa further highlighted Zimbabwe’s recent diplomatic milestones, including hosting the 25th COMESA Summit on 22 October 2026 and assuming the chairmanship of the COMESA Authority.

He also welcomed Zimbabwe’s endorsement to host the 19th AfCFTA Council of Ministers Meeting in 2027 and the Intra-African Trade Fair in 2029.

These events, he said, should create opportunities for local manufacturers, exporters and service providers.

Zimbabwean Diaspora And 2030 Vision Also In Focus

Mnangagwa called for improved consular services for Zimbabweans living abroad and urged the Foreign Affairs Ministry to complete the review of the National Diaspora Policy.

He also challenged ambassadors to identify opportunities for Zimbabweans to occupy strategic positions in international organisations.

The President reminded diplomats that their work should support the country’s ambition of becoming an upper-middle-income society by 2030.

He instructed them to translate the outcomes of the recent ZANU PF National People’s Conference and the ministry’s strategic planning workshop into measurable targets.

The message was clear: Zimbabwe’s diplomatic missions are expected to demonstrate how their work contributes to national development, rather than simply maintain relationships abroad.
